1861 Census

Geo and Flo Smith appeared on the 1861 Census of Vaughan Twp, York County, Ontario. They lived in a 1 1/2 story log home. Geo was a labourer, born in England, religion Church of Scotland, age 38, and married. Flo was age 35, and married. She was tallied [in error?] as not being a family member. Only George's birthplace was recorded. The children in the household were John (12), Mary (8), Dun (5), James (3), and not named (male, 1). It was noted that John attended school and that there had been one birth in the family that year.³

(Widowed) Death

His wife Flora died on 4 Mar 1864.⁴

After Flora died, George married twice more; first to Rebecca White by whom he had four sons, then to Sarah Jane Irwin by whom he had seven known children.

George died on 8 Feb 1909 in Lot 22 Con 7, King Tp, York County, Ontario.
Information from registration: George Smith, born March [no year recorded], age 86 yrs 11 mos 2 days, had been a farmer, married. The informant was Robert Smith of Pottageville. The medical certificate with cause of death was not returned to the registrar.¹⁰

Walter was 58, born in December 1852 in Ontario, Irish, Presbyterian, and was a labourer drawing milk. He worked 40 weeks in the previous year at 70 hours per week for $380. Mary was 56, born in April 1855 in Ontario, and was Scotch. Their son Allen was 14 and attended school.⁸

Walter and Mary appeared on the 1921 Census of Vaughan Township, York County, Ontario. They rented their residence. Walter was 68, born in Ontario, parents born in Ireland, occupation shoemaker doing repairs on his own account. Mary was 68, born in Ontario, father born in England, mother in Scotland. They were Presbyterian.⁹

Isabella was born in Upper Canada, Church of Scotland, and age 28. They lived in a 2 story frame house next to Allen's parents. Their children were Arch^d (6), Neil (4), Margret (2) and William (born in 1860.)⁵

1871 Census

Allan and Issabella McLean appeared on the 1871 Census of Elderslie Township, Bruce County, Ontario. Allan was 45, a farmer, and was unable to write. Isabella was 39. The whole family was born in Ontario, of Scotch origin, and their religion was Church of Scotland. The children were Margret (12), Hector (10), William A (9), Christina (6), Hugh A (4), and Donald (2). The oldest three were going to school.⁶

Allan and Esibella [sic] appeared on the 1881 Census of Bruce Township, Bruce County, Ontario. Allan was 56, a farmer, and married. Esibella was 49 years old. They were both born in Ontario, Canada Presbyterian, of Scotch origin, and married. Their children at home were William (18), Christina (16), Hugh (14), Flora (9), Neil (22), and Margaret (20.)⁸

Allen and Isabella appeared on the 1891 Census of Saugeen Township, Bruce County, Ontario. The McLean family lived in a 2 story wood house with 5 rooms. Allen was 66, born in Ontario, parents born in Scotland, religion Presbyterian, and was a Farmer. Isabella was 59, born in Ontario, parents born in Scotland, and religion Presbyterian. Allen could read but not write and the others could all read and write.¹⁰

1901 Census

Allan and Bella McLean appeared on the 1901 Census of Bruce Township, Bruce County, Ontario, at Lot 13 Con 12. Allan was 77, born 15 Aug 1823 in Ontario, Presbyterian, and was a farmer living on own means. Bella was 69, born 1 Feb 1832 in Ontario. They both had Gaelic as their mother tongue and could read, write, and speak English. They lived in a 4 room wood house on 100 acres with one building. With them were their children William (38) and Flora (27.)³

1911 Census

Allan and Eliza [sic] appeared on the 1911 Census of Paisley, Bruce County, Ontario, at Church Street. Allan was 84, born June 1826 in Ontario. Isabella was recorded as 'Eliza', age 79, born Aug 1831 in Ontario. Both were of Scotch origin and Presbyterian.¹¹

Allan died on 5 Nov 1912 in Paisley, Bruce County, Ontario.

Burial was in Port Elgin on 27th Jan 1930 and the cause of death was apoplexy 3 yrs.¹⁴
