COMMUNITY PORTRAITS
ROWED "Roy" DENMARK MARTIN
...school bus mechanic

Co-operation and friendliness with all whom he may come in contact, students, bus drivers, road gangs, and mechanics, combined with a genuine love of the Chilliwack valley, are the things that have instilled themselves most strongly on the mind of "Roy" Martin, chief mechanic and dispatcher for the Chilliwack high school buses.
Starting in 1939 as chief mechanic of the school buses, with seven then carrying about 300 high school students the service now has 10 of its own and three more chartered, with the 19 [sic] school-owned ones carrying almost 2000 students per day to and from school.
Born in Russell, Man., in 1890, Mr Martin went to Dryden, Ont., with his parents when he was six years old where he went to school and grew into a full fledged mechanic before moving on to Winnipeg at the age of 23.
He stayed three years in Winnipeg but the wanderlust got him and he moved on to Edmonton still working as a mechanic.
In 1917 he enlisted with the Canadian army in the motor transport branch, and was mustered out in June, 1918.
While in the army Mr Martin travelled through Belgium, France and Germany. When the Armistice was declared he was on the border between Belgium and Germany.
After being discharged from the army in 1918 he came to Chilliwack where his wife, Mary Clayton Fowles whom he married in Dryden in 1910, was staying with relatives.
Upon his arrival at Chilliwack, he started work with Lillies Motors, which was on the site where Chilliwack Cartage now stands and where he remained for five years before switching over to Brett's Garage in the old location behind the Bank of Commerce.
Roy stayed with Brett's for eight years---four in the old and present location and four in the recently vacated Pat's Service Station which was then called the Star Garage and was owned by Earl Brett.
From the Star he transferred to Cherry Motors, then called Watkin McLeod Motors. After staying for a short time he moved across the street to the Shell garage which he managed for a year before going back to McLeod Motors.
For his last excursion away from home because he "just wanted a change," he went to Penticton to work in a garage there where he remained aobut six months and came back to Cherry Motors.
From Cherry Motors in 1939 he went to the position he now holds as supervisor of school buses.
Mr Martin has found that regardless of what some people will say of school age children, on the whole the Chilliwack Valley youngsters are a good lot and easy to get along with.
When he started, it was more or less of a simple job, to keep the seven buses going over about 280 miles per day. But now the buses travel approximately 1200 miles per day and only three buses have been added to the fleet.
Now it is something more than a small headache to keep the whole thing running smooth; again he stressed the co-operation of all with whom he came in contact in an effort to keep the vehicles on their daily runs.
Mr Martin says his life has been full of interesting little incidents since he took on the job and he can often sit and reminisce on little things students have said and done that will keep him amused for hours.
The first trouble he had was getting the boys to realize that the girls should get on the bus first and that there should be no pushing and trying to get in ahead of one another.
Storms have taken their toll in the valley on the schedules but never on students or buses, said Mr Martin proudly.
"I think the only time buses were ever stranded due to the storms was in 1942 when two buses got stuck and snowed in and Mr Graham and I had to go out behind a snow plough to rescue the marooned youngsters."
Again he was noticeably pleased as he spoke of their safety record. "We always stress safety to all our drivers with the result that there has been just one accident, that was when a little girl on a bike appeared from behind a hedge and the driver couldn't stop in time.
Fortunately even in that case the girl was not hurt beyond a few scratches and bruises.
Mr Martin has five children and ten grandchildren.
The oldest is Roy Foulis Martin who has four children, the next oldest, Nina Mary Ames, who lives in Marysville, Washington, has got one. Another daughter is Rita Francis Kelly, who lives in Winnipeg and has four children.
To finish off his family of young folk the Martins have twin boys Clayton James and Kendall Edward both 23.
His oldest grandchild is 13.
Ever since he has come to Chilliwack, Mr Martin has lived in the same house at 712 Yale east until is [sic] burned down this fall.
Since all his children went through school here he comes in contact with 2000 more almost every day, plus the ones who have come and gone in the 10 years he has been there in the same capacity. He is considered somewhat of an expert on child care and has a deep store of child psychology that did not come out of a book.
To those thousands of past and present students he will remain the curly haired stocky man who runs around twice a day shouting orders to students and drivers alike and who probably saved each from possible injury innumerable times. As far as Mr Martin is concerned, it will be that way for a long time to come.10
