Life Events

Note.Roland's father was Frederick Bacon Barwell, a fine English painter, watercolourist and etcher, who was highly regarded for his figure subjects and genre scenes. He studied art in London at the Royal Academy Schools and exhibited his art throughout Britain for most of the last half of the nineteenth century. Beginning in 1855, Frederick Barwell regularly contributed his paintings and etchings to both the British Institute and to the Society of British Artists, London. He was also a close friend of the great Victorian painter, J. E. Millais, and they shared a studio for some time. During the years many of Frederick Barwell's exhibited works of art were praised by the most famous of British art critics, John Ruskin.
Frederick Bacon Barwell is also of importance for being one of the first Victorian era painters to seriously turn to the art of etching. He was a prominent member of the Junior Etching Club (1857-1864), an institution that greatly contributed to the revival of etching in England.
