1851 CensusDuncan and Marey Ann McClean appeared on the 1851 Census of Vaughan Township, York County, Ontario. Duncan was 30 years old and a Farmer. Marey A was 25. They were both born in Ontario and their religion was Established Presbyterian. They lived in a flatted log house.
Also in their household were two non-family members Isable McKinon (13) and John McCormack (14, labour.)5 
1861 CensusDuncan and Mary Ann appeared on the 1861 Census of Markham Township, York County, Canada West. Duncan was a farmer, age 38, born in Canada West. Mary Ann was 33, born in Canada West. Their children were Margaret (9) and Wm Allen (6).
The family lived in a one story frame house, the children attended school, and their religion was Church of Scotland.
Three more of their children were found together on the previous census page: Christan Ann (4), Mary Ann (3), and Sarah (1). Sarah was noted to have been born in 1860.6 
(Witness) Marriage Duncan McLean witnessed the marriage of Hugh McLean and Agnes Bryson on 20 Jun 1861 in Maple Presbyterian Church, Vaughan Twp, York County, Ontario. In the 1901 census Duncan and Hugh were living together and noted to be brothers.1 
1871 CensusDuncan and Mary Ann McLean appeared on the 1871 Census of Markham Township, York County, Ontario. Duncan was 48 and a farmer. Mary Ann was 42. They were both born in Ontario, of Scotch origin, Presbyterian, and married. The children in the household were Margaret (18), William (16), Christina (14), Mary A (12), Sarah (10), James (8), John (4), and Colin (2). All but Margaret attended school.4 
Research Note His wife Mary Ann McLean died sometime between 1871 and 1881. 
1881 CensusDuncan appeared on the 1881 Census of Richmond Hill, York County, Ontario. He was a widower, age 58, born in Ontario, Presbyterian, Scotch origin, and a Labourer. The children with him were Maggie (28), William A (26), Christina (24), Sarah (20), Gordon (18, Painter), John F (14, school), and Colin (12, school.)7 
1891 CensusDuncan McLean appeared on the 1891 Census of Richmond Hill, York County, Ontario. Duncan was 68, widowed, born in Ontario, parents born in Scotland, Presbyterian, and a labourer. With him was his 54 year old brother Hugh. They lived in a 1 story wood house with 6 rooms. Also in the household was Duncan's daughter Sarah Burkett (30, married) and her children Benjamin (9), Lonza (7), Lillian (5), and Jennie (2).8 
1901 CensusBrothers Duncan and Hugh McLean appeared on the 1901 Census of Stouffville, York County, Ontario. Duncan was the head of household. He was 79 and born 12 August 1821, Hugh was 66 and born 10 May 1834. They were both widowers, born in rural Ontario, of Scotch origin, Presbyterian, and laborers. Living with them was Duncan's widowed daughter Sarah Birkett and her four children.9 
DeathDuncan died on 11 Jan 1906 in Stouffville, York County, Ontario.
Details from death register: Duncan McLean, age 84 years 5 months, residence Stouffville, laborer, widower, birthplace Tp Vaughan, cause of death apoplexy of 3 weeks duration. The death was registered by the physician, F A Dales on January 12th.3
