Caroline was born in Suffolk and moved to Lambeth, Surrey. There she married George Smart, a cheesemonger, and she signed the marriage register with an X. The Smarts lived in St James Westminster but had their children baptised back in Lambeth. Son William was baptised in both places! Caroline was widowed in her early 40s with children ranging in age from 4 to 21. Initially, she continued as a grocer and took in lodgers. Later she became a monthly nurse, that is, a person who stayed with a family for a month after they had a new baby. When not nursing, she lived with her son William's family in St Pancras.
