1861 CensusJohn and Mary A appeared on the 1861 Census of North Weald Bassett, Essex, at Hastingwood Hamlet. The writing on the census return was a scrawl; their surname looks like Cardle or Candle. John was 31, ag Ag lab, born in Harley? Essex. Mary A was 31, born in White Roothing. Their children were Ma?ha (3, born Harlow) and Alis (1, born Northweald.)5 
(Widowed) DeathHis wife Mary Ann died in 1868.6 
1871 CensusJohn Cordell appeared on the 1871 Census of North Weald Bassett, Essex. He was a widower, age 41, agricultural laborer, birthplace Harlow. With him were two daughters, Rosetta (14, housekeeper) and Margerett (4, scholar.)7 
MarriageHe married Jane Sear on 2 Mar 1872 in All Saints St Johns Wood, Marylebone, Middlesex.

1881 CensusJohn and Jane Cordell appeared on the 1881 Census of Mile End Old Town, Middlesex, at 58 West Street. John was 40, a Carman, and born in Eping Essex. Jane was 65 and born in Stepney Middlesex. They were the only two in the household.9

1891 CensusJohn Cordell appeared on the 1891 Census of Bethnal Green, London, at 43 Hague Street. He was living with his married daughter, Margaret Glasscock and her husband John. John was a widower, age 61, employed as a brewers labourer, and was born in Harlow Essex. His son Frederick (25) was also there.11 
DeathJohn died on 12 Jan 1893.12
 
BurialHe was buried on 18 Jan 1893 in Foster Street Non Conformist Burial Ground, Harlow, Essex.13
