A SON SUMMONED TO MAINTAIN HIS FATHER.--Thomas Tucker Penny, an unmarried man, was summoned to show cause why he should not support his father, Richard Penny, a poor person in the Taunton Union Workhouse. The father was a dairyman, became lunatic, and was sent to the workhouse. The son took on the dairy, borrowed the money to purchase nine cows, and rented ninety acres of land. He offered to pay 1s a week, which Mr H C Trenchard, who appeared for the guardians, said they refused to accept. The Bench thought 1s a week sufficient, and made an order accordingly.⁵

THOMAS PENNY begs respectfully to thank his patrons for their kind support and confidence during the last twenty-five years, and to inform them and the public generally that on and after 1st of April next the price of his milk will be---RICH, PURE, NEW MILK, delivered twice daily, to all parts of the town of Taunton, at 3d PER QUART.¹⁰

Thomas Penny, of Musgrove Farm, appealed on behalf of his son, Claude Ernest Penny.--Applicant stated that he had a farm of 140 acres, with a dairy of 60 cows. Three of his men had joined the Forces. If his son was taken he would have to have two men, and they would have to be educated.--Conditional exemption granted.¹³

DEATH OF AN OLD TAUNTONIAN.--There passed away to his rest on February 22nd, after a short illness, Mr Thomas Looker Penny, of Musgrove Farm. He was in his 72nd year and was well-known and respected. His business is the oldest established milk business in Taunton, and dates from 1837. He leaves a widow and two sons. His body was laid to rest at St Mary's Cemetery by the side of his two children, the service being conducted by the Rev J N Boughton, of Wilton. The coffin was of unpolished oak with heavy brass breastplate and fittings. There were several beautiful wreaths.¹⁵
