Research Note Joseph Grinter/Grenter was born in Muchelney, a village about 20 miles to the SSE of Bleadon, in the heart of Somerset and within the ’Somerset Levels’ - a great area of marshland and fen that used to exist in the centre of the county until it was drained. His baptism record (16th May 1784) used the version Grinter. He was a soldier in Napoleonic times and moved (after being discharged from the army in 1813) to Bleadon, where he married Jane Palmer on 5 December 1815.2
