Mary Harris1

Children of Mary Harris and Samuel Fernee |
|
Life Events | |
Baptism | Mary Harris was baptized on 10 Feb 1750/51 in St Mary Hornsey, Middlesex, the daughter of Thomas, a labourer, and Sarah. [The register says 1750 but at that point in history, the year began on the 25th of March so the year is adjusted to 1751 in the new style. There are two instances of this baptism at Ancestry.com, presumably the parish register and the bishop's transcript, but the website does not identify which is which]2 |
Marriage | She married Samuel Fernee on 13 May 1776 in Old Church, St Pancras, Middlesex. Details from the register: Samuel Fernee, batchelor & Mary Harris spinster, both of this parish, married in this Chapel by Banns; witnesses were Benj Mercer and Ann Scott.1 |
Signature | 1 |
(Widowed) Burial. | Her husband Samuel died in 1802. Their eight children ranged in age from 9 to 25.3 |
Death | Mary died on 26 May 1838 in Near the Ponds, Highgate, Middlesex. Details from the certificate: Mary Fernee, age 88 years, Gentlewoman, died of Decay of Nature, informant Mary Ann French or Finch of High Street, Highgate, who signed with an X.4 |
Anecdote | Over 60 years later, this story about Mary's funeral was still being recounted. James Fernee told of a visit c1901 to his cousin Anthony Storey's daughter Mrs. Higgins, baker and confectioner in Hornsey. He wrote, "In the course of conversation Mrs. Higgins related of a funeral which took place at Hornsey, I think it was Father's cousin Anthony Storey's grand mother, she was a Fernee, however the remarkable but the usual [sic] thing was, that six sons were the mourners, young and elder were all baldheaded, that is a sure brand of the family, I have never yet known any other."5 |
