Newspaper Published 19 Sep 1887.

East Penwith Petty Sessions These sessions were held at the Camborne
Town-hall on Tuesday, before Mr. D.W. Bain (chairman), Capt. W. Rabling,
and Messrs. Hocking and Penrose. Thomas Polkinghorne, Phillack, was
charged with having a 2 lbs. weight which was deficient. In defence he
said he had borrowed it of a neighbour. Fined 6d. And 9s. Costs. -
Richard Lee and T. Drake, miners, Camborne, were charged with unlawfully
having in their possession on the 27th August a quantity of rabbits and
nets. Superintendent Miller stated that on Saturday afternoon, the 27th
August, he was on duty with two constables at the bottom of the town,
near the Folley, when they met the defendants, with their clothes
looking as if they had something concealed. On being asked to produce
what they had under their coats, they took out 13 rabbits and nine nets.
He then told them they would be charged with unlawful possession, as
from the nature of the stock it looked as if they had been poaching. A
gamekeeper at Tehidy, named Feltham, was then called, and said he saw
the two men on the day in question on the cliffs on Mr. Basset's
property with dogs and nets. Although he did not see them catch
anything, yet they had the appearance of having been poaching by the
nets and ferrets, and by the rabbits which were hanging out of their
pockets. - Mr. Dobell, for the defence, said there was no direct proof
that the defendants were really poaching, and stated it to be a very
unlikely thing that these men would be so indiscreet as to go netting
and trapping high by day on land so watched as were the cliffs. - The
Bench were of opinion that the case was clearly one of poaching, and
fined each of the defendants 5s. and 11s. costs. - Two cross-summonses
arising out of the case were then heard. Feltham, the gamekeeper, was
charged with assaulting Richard Lee. After watching Lee and Drake for
some time on the cliffs, Feltham came up to them with an assistant
called Luxon, and said, "Halloa, my boys; I've been looking at you; what
have you in your pockets? You had better turn them out, and give me your
names and addresses." This Lee and Drake refused to do, and Feltham
said, "If you don't, I must make you." A scuffle then arose, in which
Lee struck Feltham a blow on the nose with a stone. This Lee denied, but
said Feltham came up to them in a trap with Luxon and, getting out, said
"Turn out your b------ pockets." He said he should not, and told him he
had no authority to see what he had in his pockets. This was
corroborated by Drake and by a youth named Mitchell, servant, in the
employ of Mr. Sleeman, who was standing by at the time. - Mr. Thomas
prosecuted, and Mr. Dobell defended. - The bench gave it as their
judgment that Lee was wrong in refusing to give his name and address,
and therefore provoked the use of force. They consequently dismissed the
case. - Then came a charge against Luxon, the assistant-keeper, that he
did on the same day and place assault T. Drake by striking him across
the face with the butt end of a whip. It appears that whilst Lee and
Feltham were scuffling Drake went to Lee's assistance to get off
Feltham, and Luxon became concerned about his mate. With a whip which he
held in his hand he made an attack on Drake. The same evidence was
produced in this case as in the preceding one. - Being of opinion that
Luxon used more violence than the circumstances warranted, the Bench
fined him 2s. and 12s. costs. - John Johns, labourer, charged William
Holman, grocer, &c., with wrongful dismissal, and claimed £3 10s,
wages in lieu of a month's notice. The plaintiff said he was engaged by
the defendant about nine months ago as a labourer, to work on ground and
carry goods, &c., The terms of my engagement were 17s. 6d. per week,
hours of work from seven a.m. to five p.m., to give and take a month's
notice to quit. - The defendant, who pleaded that the plaintiff
neglected his work was ordered to pay Johns up to the time he had
fulfilled his duties, each party to pay his own costs.9

However, there is a George Feltham who married Harriet Frith in 1881 and the marriage certificate says that George's father William was a Keeper. Other details suggest that it might be the same George Feltham who was married to Elizabeth Downing. Hmmm, needs more research.
