Life Events

Research Note Elizabeth was a bit of a puzzle to figure out as she was understandably economical with the truth. In the 1891 census she and her 2 month old daughter Rosina were living with Elizabeth's sister Mary Ann and husband William Joseph Jordan. Elizabeth was recorded as a 'widow'. The baby, Rosina, was baptised a few weeks before the census at St Mary Magdalene Paddington, which was several parishes away from where the Jordans lived. In the baptism register, Rosina's parents were recorded as William Charles, an engineer, & Elizabeth Feltham of 69 Percy Road. These were densely populated parishes and perhaps Elizabeth took Rosina to a parish where the minister wouldn't know she was inventing a father's name. Coincidentally there was a couple named William Charles & Elizabeth Feltham who lived in Lancashire and had no children.
Interestingly, on Rosina's birth certificate Elizabeth said her maiden name was EGAN. This turned out to be Elizabeth's mother's maiden name.

BirthElizabeth Feltham was born circa 1869 in Marylebone, Middlesex.1

(with Parents) 1871 CensusElizabeth appeared on the 1871 Census of Paddington, Middlesex with her parents. She was 2 years old and born in Marylebone.1

Note.On August 3rd 1890, Elizabeth Feltham and Geo W Feltham witnessed the marriage of Elizabeth's sister Mary Ann to William Joseph Jordan [I do not know who Geo W Feltham is].3
Note.On 19 February 1891 her daughter Rosina was baptised at St Mary Magdalene, Paddington. The parish register noted that Rosina was born February 3rd, the daughter of William Charles Feltham, an Engineer, & Elizabeth Feltham of 69 Percy Road.4
1891 CensusElizabeth Feltham appeared on the 1891 Census, taken on the 5th of April, of Kilburn, Middlesex, at 42 Malvern Road. She and her 2 month old daughter were living with William J and Mary A Jordan [Mary Ann was Elizabeth's sister]. They all lived in two rooms. Elizabeth was a widow [sic], age 23, worked as a shirt needleworker, and was born in N Kensington. Her daughter Rosina was 2 months old and born in Kilburn.5
MarriageShe married John Toms on 8 Apr 1894 in St John's Waterloo Road, Lambeth, London.
Details from the register: John Toms, age 31, bachelor, occupation Stoker, residence 5 Morpeth Place, father William Toms, Miller;
Elizabeth Feltham, 26, spinster, 5 Morpeth Place, father John Feltham, Builder;
They were married in the parish church after banns and the witnesses were John Owens and [Elizabeth's stepsister] Jane Ellistone. Elizabeth signed her name and John made his mark.6

A COMPLAINT FROM PYLLE
With reference to complaints from Pylle, Dr Smith reported that he had examined a sample of water, and found it slightly contaminated, but not so much so as to be injurious to health. It should, however, be taken for drinking purposes from the Pye Hill side. The water he examined seemed to have been neglected, and the best water would become impure if left to itself. Good water like good beer required a quick draught. The drainage was in one case very bad; the drains from some cottages on the upper side of a farm there ran into what had been placed for the cottages on the lower side, and though sufficient for the latter, they were not both.7

1891 CensusGeorge and Charlotte Foote appeared on the 1891 Census of Pylle, Somerset, at Fosse Road. They occupied 3 rooms and there was no one else in the household. George was 59, an Agricultural Labourer, and was born in Charlton Horethorne. Charlotte was 49 and born in Oborne.8

George was 70, a Stonebreaker working on his own account, born in Charlton Horethorne. Charlotte was 58, a monthly nurse working on her own account, born in Oborn. With them were two granddaughters, Elsie March (9, born Pylle) and Elsie M Foote (1, born in Wales.)9
DeathGeorge died on 18 Jul 1907 in Pylle, Somerset.
He was buried July 21st and his age was noted to be 77.10,11

Angus McKinnon1

#445, (bt 1792 - 1796 - 1882)

Children of Angus McKinnon and Mary McFadyen

Life Events

BirthAngus McKinnon was born between 1792 and 1796 in Argyll, Scotland.2

Research Note Various records throughout his life, especially early on, point to a birth date around 1794. However, Angus was reported to be 97 (wife's obituary) or 98 (gravestone) at death which would indicate a birth about 1785. It is not uncommon to understate age early in life and overstate it as one becomes elderly.
Research Note Surviving Kilfinichen and Kilvickeon parish records begin in 1804, so there might not be any record available of Angus' birth or who his parents were.3
MarriageHe married Mary McFadyen in 1824 in Scotland.4

Research Note Their marriage was not recorded in the Kilfinichen & Kilvickeon parish register, which is where several of their children were baptised. Their residence as noted on the baptisms of the first few children was Balnahard or Gribun. Baptisms have not been found for the children born after 1832.
1841 CensusAngus and Mary McKinnon appeared on the 1841 Census of Kilfinichen & Kilvickeon, Argyll, at Bailinahair. Angus was 45, a farmer, and born in this county. Mary was 35 and born in this county. Their children were Chirsty (15), John (11), Flora (9), Catharine (7), Isabella (4), and Donald (2). [In the 1841 census, ages of adults were rounded down to the nearest 5 years].2
Research Note In 1841, Gribun, where the McKinnon family lived, was one of ten census districts in the parish. It had 24 families, total 143 persons. In service in the south were 20 males and 30 females. There had been no emigration in the last 6 months.
The primary occupations in Kilfinichen & Kilvickeon were farmer, crofter, ag lab, cotter, and servant. Almost everyone was born in the county. Dozens of residents (male and female) were reported to be in service in the south. There was evidence of widespread destitution. The census taker commented, "a great portion of this district has of late been laid out as sheep walks which was formerly thickly inhabited by small farmers -- the most of whom are now poor cotters wherever they could find houses and destitute of means to defray their expenses to the Colonies particularly to Canada where they would in general expect to meet Friends who would render them assistance."2
Item In 1843, Angus and Mary joined the Free Church.4
ImmigrationThey immigrated from Mull in Argyll, Scotland to Vaughan Township in York County, Ontario, Canada in 1849.4
1851/2 CensusAngus and Mary appeared on the 1852 Census of Vaughan Township, York County, Ontario, enumerated Jan 1852. They lived in a one story log house. Angus was age 60 next birthday, married, a farmer, born in Scotland, and a Free Presbyterian. Mary was born in Scotland, Free Presbyterian, and age 47 on her next birthday. Their children were Nancy (24), John (22), Catharine (18), Issabella (14), Donald (12), Mary (9), and James (7). Enumerated next to them was their married daughter Flora McLean.1
Residence-Moved In 1854, Angus and Mary and most of their family moved and settled in Bruce County.4
Research Note Bruce Township was surveyed in 1851 and 1852. There was a land sale in 1854 and 80% was sold within a year.5
1861 CensusAngus and Mary appeared on the 1861 Census of Bruce Township, Bruce County, Ontario. Angus was 72, born in Scotland, Free Church, married, and a farmer. Mary was 55, born in Scotland, Free Church and married. "1857" was written in the margin; it appears to refer to the date of arrival in Bruce. Their children at home were John (30), Donald (19), and Mary (18). They lived in a one story log house with another family (McInnis) and a single farmer named Angus McKinnon (23, born in Upper Canada, family member). [It is possible that young Angus was a separate household but there was no corresponding description of the house]6
(Other) 1871 CensusAngus and Mary appeared on the 1871 Census of Bruce Township, Bruce County, Ontario, in the household of their son and wife Donald and Flora. Angus was 84 and a farmer. Mary was 67. Both were born in Scotland, Canada Presbyterian, and able to read but not write.7

North Bruce, 1889
Another Old Settler Gone.

The removal by death on Wednesday of last week of Mary McKinnon, relict of the late Angus McKinnon, of the 12th con. of Bruce was like the taking away of a link that binds the present to the past. How few people there are now living who first saw the light of day before the present century began. Mrs. McKinnon was born in the island of Mull, Argyleshire, Scotland, in the year 1798. She was united in marriage to Angus McKinnon in 1824 who was a native of the same island. He was born in 1785 and passed away in 1882 at the advanced age of 97 years. The late Angus McKinnon was a good man and his name is yet fragrant in the minds of many for his holiness of life and the lofty spirit of devotion that characterized his every act. He was a most conscientious man and in the smallest details of life aimed at serving his Master most faithfully. This might be illustrated by mentioning an incident that happened in his early religious history and is frequently told of him still. In his youth he learned to play the bagpipes and was passionately fond of the music of his native hills. At the period of his conversion, about 1843, he underwent deep conviction ere he found the peace that never left him in his subsequent years. On one occasion during this period of his life on returning from church he deliberately consigned his hitherto beloved pipes to the flames and was never afterwards known to play them. During the stormy times of 1843, he and his wife identified themselves with the Free Church, being staunch defenders of the spiritual independence of the church. The year 1849 found them in Canada and settled in the township of Vaughan, York county, the first home of so many Scottish immigrants who afterwards led the way in pioneer life in many parts of Ontario. Five years later or in 1854, they settled on the lands in Bruce where they were destined to spend the remainder of their days and which are now owned by their sons, Donald and John. On August 17th, 1882, Angus McKinnon peacefully passed away, full of years, and respected by every one who knew him. One who knew him well says, “I never saw a more consistent Christian. He acknowledged God in everything and lived very near to Him, being specially noted for the qualities of reverence, trust and gratitude.” And now after a longer stay of seven years his aged partner in life has also crossed the river. She went home on Wednesday last and her remains were borne to their last resting place on Friday. A large concourse of friends assembled to pay their last tribute of respect. The last sad rites were performed by the Rev. John Eadie, pastor of the North Bruce Presbyterian church. The aged couple were tenderly nursed and cared for in their last years by Mrs. Donald McKinnon to whom the other members of the family feel themselves indebted.

This aged couple left a numerous family. Eleven children were born to them. Two of these died in infancy and another at a more matured age. The remaining eight survive and all were present at the funeral on Friday. They are Mrs. Thos. Smith, Tara ; Mrs. McGillivray, Port Eligin ; John McKinnon, Bruce ; Mrs. McLean, Bruce ; Mrs. John Bell, Saugeen ; Donald McKinnon, Bruce ; Mrs. Gilchrist, Bruce, and James McKinnon, Port Elgin.

In all there were born to this patriarchal couple 11 children, 72 grand children and 19 great grand children, making the whole number of descendants 102. There are now living 8 children, 63 grand children and 17 great grand children, or 88 in all. The grand children are scattered widely, among them being teachers, preachers, merchants, &c. It might be worthy of note in concluding to say that nearly all the children and grand children who have come to years of maturity are members of the Christian church. How far this may be in answer to Angus McKinnon’s earnest and frequent prayer for blessing “on children and children’s children” we know not.5
