     Richard Suydam was born into a large family in Monroe County, Michigan in 1856. He was 13 when his father, a farmer, died. There were 12 children in the household from 24 on down to one month old. When he was 21, Richard married Anna Van Zandt from a neighboring farm family and they continued to live with Richard's mother for several years.
     Richard was a laborer, then a farmer, then for many years a teamster in the city of Adrian.

They had been married for 32 years (first marriage for both) and rented their home. Anna had 12 children, 8 of whom were still living. 1920 CensusRichard and Anna appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Adrian, Lenawee County, Michigan, at 1136 Frank Street, enumerated 5 Jan 1920. They rented their home. Richard was 63, born in Michigan, parents born in Pennsylvania, and he worked as a Laborer in a Wire Fence factory. Anna was 59, born in Michigan, father born in Pennsylvania and mother born in Canada. With them were Marvin (24) who also worked at the wire fence factory, Glen (15) who went to school, and their widowed daughter Mabel Hess (29).25

ObituaryHis obituary was published on 19 Sep 1924 in the Dundee Reporter.
     Richard D. Suydam was born in Dundee township, Monroe county, Michigan, Oct. 17, 1856 and died at his home on East Maumee street, Adrian, Monday, Sept. 8, 1924. He was married to Anna Vanzandt, March 24, 1878 and to this union were born 12 children, 8 of whom with the widow survive him. Five of the children, Clarence, Floyd, Mrs. Mable Fox, Richard and Glenn, reside in Adrian. Robert of Detroit, Howard of Jackson and Marion [sic] of Cleveland, O.
     Mr. Suydam had been a resident of this city for nearly 28 years. Twenty-five years ago, he was converted, became a follower of Jesus Christ, a member of the Free Methodist church and died in the faith. Six of his sons acted as pall bearers and the body was taken to Petersburg cemetery for burial. The funeral services were held in the Free Methodist church of Adrian, conducted by W.C. Muffit, assisted by Rev. John Timbers, pastor.
     His family, many relatives and friends and the church to whom he belonged, have lost a good man.
     His relatives in other sections are, a sister, Mrs. Tom Collins from Jackson; four brothers: Jake and Charlie from Dundee, Ralph from Palmyra, George from Britton.5
