MR. JAMES MACDONALD: A FAMOUS AGRICULTURIST.

Mr James Macdonald, who had a world-wide reputation as an agriculturist, died in Edinburgh, on Monday, after a long illness. Mr Macdonald, who was 61 years of age, had a long career as a journalist, specialising in agricultural matters. He undertook several special commissions for the "Scotsman," and as the outcome of a visit to the United States, wrote a series of articles, which were published in book form, under the title of "Food from the Far West." Other works came from his pen; and he edited and in a great part re-wrote Stephen's "Book of the Farm." Mr. Macdonald left the "Scotsman" to edit the "Irish Farmers' Gazette"; and, after spending some time in Dublin, he went to London to take charge of the "Live Stock Journal" and allied papers. A few years later he removed to Edinburgh to develop the "Farming World," which, in the meantime, he had acquired. In 1890, he severed his official connection with journalism, and returned to Dublin as agricultural superintent to the Royal Dublin Society, but in 1893 he was back again in Edinburgh, having been appointed secretary of the Highland and Agricultural Society. He retired from the secretaryship last year.
Mr Macdonald held many positions in addition to those named, among them being Lecturer on Farm Live Stock in the Aberdeen and North of Scotland School of Chemistry and Agriculture, and hon. member of the Royal Agricultural Socity, and Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.9
