John Kinross1
#394, (c 1750 - )
Children of John Kinross and Helen Dawson |
|
Life Events | |
Research Note | As for getting further back than John, the catch is that there is more than one family in Dunblane with a son named John of a likely age and I haven't determined with certainty which it is. The parish registers of Dunblane were poorly kept, unfortunately. Even though we don't know who his father is, it is likely that his grandparents were James Kinross & Jean Burden. This John's great grandson John Kinross of Datchet wrote in 1934, "John came from Wester Cambushinnie (in the estate of Kippenross, Dunblane), or one of the two Feddals (all in Strathallan) and became a tenant of Shieldhill, a few miles to the east, in the parish of Braco which was constructed out of that of Dunblane", so unfortunately he didn't know the answer either. |
Birth | John Kinross was born circa 1750. |
Marriage | He married Helen Dawson on 5 Aug 1773 in Muthill, Perthshire. They were married by Mr. Scot.1 |
Gravestone | Chances are slim that we will ever know all the valuable wording on this gravestone. This photo was taken in 1962 and the stone has since disappeared from the cemetery. The names are from 3 generations: John Kinross & Helen Dawson, John Kinross & Isabella Eadie, & John Kinross and Elizabeth Graham Stirling.2 |

Baptism | James Graham was baptized on 25 Feb 1694 in Dunblane, Perthshire. Probably the correct baptism -- the only James, son of John for many years.1 |
Marriage | He married Agnes Finlayson.2 |
Note. | Witnesses for his children's baptisms included Thomas Grame (in Cromlix, 1737, 1741), 1748; Robert & Wm Stirlings elders (1729); Robt McFarlane (1737.)1 |
Occupation | James Graham was a tenant farmer in Cromlix.3 |
Research Note | According to Fasti, James [born 1737] is the third son of James, tenant in Cromlix [born 1694] - if Fasti is correct, there is another son to be found, perhaps in the gap between John & Margaret.3 |

Children of John Graham |
|
|
Life Events | |
Research Note | In the year 1610 James Graham, a descendant of the Menteith Grahams, had a lease from Sir James Chisholm, of the farm of Cromlix in Dunblane parish, and settled there, and son succeeded father in the old place for nearly two hundred years in an unbroken line. In 1715 the James Graham, then tenant of Cromlix, witnessed the battle of Sheriffmuir from his own door. He had five sons and two daughters by his wife, Agnes Finlayson. The third son, James, was minister of Killearn; the fourth, William, succeeded his father in Cromlix; and the fifth, Thomas, was the ancestor of the Ballewan family.2 |
Birth | John Graham was born say 1660. |
Occupation | He was a tenant farmer. |
Research Note | In the Dunblane parish register there is a 1694 baptism for James, son of John, no place recorded. This John is likely James' father because he is in Cromlix which is where James also was a tenant farmer. James first son is named John. John also has a son Thomas who witnessed baptisms of James' children.1 |
(Witness) Note. | John Grahams elder & younger in Cromlix were witnesses to John Reid's daughter's baptism in 1706.1 |

Research Note | This photograph was inscribed many years later. Mary Reid would definitely have been "a Stirling in Cambushinnie" but who are the others? I would also like to hear from anyone who can date the photo from clothing, hairstyles, etc. |

Marriage | She married James Stirling, son of Alexander Stirling and Margaret McLaren, on 16 May 1829 in Dunblane, Perthshire. The register noted they were both of this parish. The actual marriage information was not recorded, so this may be a date of banns.1 |

William Reid1
#2946, (c 1723 - 1800)
Children of William Reid |
|
Children of William Reid and Lilias Sharp |
|
Life Events | |
Birth | William Reid was born circa 1723.2 |
Marriage | He married Lilias Sharp.3,2 |
Research Note | Lilias Sharp was is identified as William Reid's wife on their gravestone. Unfortunately, the Dunblane marriage records are missing for the period in which they likely married. There is quite a gap in William's children and Lilias was about 13 years younger than William; perhaps a second marriage for him. |
Note. | Witnesses for his sons' baptisms were Alexr and William Reids (1757), James and Alexander Reids yr [there, i.e. Wester Feaddles] (1759), James & Alexr Reid (1769.)1 |
Death | William died on 6 Oct 1800.2 |
Burial | He was buried in Ardoch, Muthill, Perthshire.2 |
Gravestone | Their gravestone is a table stone with a share & coulter in Ardoch Cemetery, Muthill, Perthshire.2 |
Research Note | In 2013, Colin Bendall visited the cemetery, photographing and transcribing the inscriptions. Much detail had weathered since the Mitchell's transcriptions in 1975. Combining the two yields: HERE LIES THE BODY OF LILY SHARP WIFE OF WM REID TENANT IN WESTER FEDDAL DEPARTED THIS ..... DECr 7th 1792 ...... ...... ...... 56 YEARS AND THE BODY OF WILLIAM REID HER HUSBAND WHO DEPARTED THIS EARTH OCTr 6TH 1800 AGED 77 YEARS AND JAMES REID THEIR SON WHO DIED AT WESTER FEDDAL MARCH 16th 1848 AGED 78 YEARS. |
Research Note | "Tenant" means tenant farmer. |
Research Note | Identical stones for James Reid (c1718-1797) and William Reid (c1723-1800) are next to one another in the cemetery. They both farmed in Wester Feddal. Were they brothers? It is likely. One possibility for William's origin: There was a baptism for William, son of John in Whittetstown (still in the parish of Dunblane), in 1723. However a Feddal origin seems more likely as Reids were tenants there long before his birth. There was a baptism for James, son of Alexander in Wester Feddal, in 1717. The date fits this James. After James, there are baptisms for other children of Alexander in Wester Feddal in 1726, 1729, 1733 and 1735. Obviously there is space for a William born c1723. Gaps and lack of mother's names in the baptism registers make it difficult to draw conclusions at this point. |

Newspaper | Published 3 Nov 1798 in the Newcastle Courant. THRESHING MACHINE Extract from the Agricultural Survey of the West Riding of Yorkshire. [7th paragraph] Another threshing machine was invented about 1758, by Mr Michael Stirling, a farmer in the parish of Dumblain, Perthshire. This machine was nearly the same as the common mill for dressing flax, being a vertical shaft with four cross arms, inclosed in a cylindrical case, three feet and a half high, and eight feet diameter. Within this case the shaft with its arms were turned with considerable velocity by a water wheel, and the sheaves of corn being let down gradually through an opening for the purpose on the top of the box, the grain was beat off by the arms, and pressed with the straw through an opening in the floor from which it was separated by riddles shaken by the mill, and then cleaned by fanners also turned by it. The great defect of this machine was, that it broke off the ears of barley or wheat, instead of beating out the grain, and was only fit for oats.7 |
Item | In 1772, Michael Stirling passed on the rotary threshing mill business to his son Alexander.4 |
Death | Michael died on 1 Feb 1796 in Craighead, Dunblane, Perthshire, at the home of his son Alexander.8,4 |

Item | In 1912, Elizabeth Graham Stirling and John Kinross celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary at Causewayhead.13 |
Newspaper | . An unusual event of not a little interest took place in the quiet village of Causewayhead on Saturday last. This was the celebration of the "diamond wedding" of Mr John Kinross, J.P., and Mrs Kinross, St Leonards, who received the congratulations of their relatives, friends, and neighbours on the happy occasion. Mr Kinross, who has reached the long age of ninety and is still hale and hearty, is a native of Ardoch Parish, Perthshire, his father having been tenant of the farm of Gannochan on the Braco estate. In 1845 young Kinross succeeded to the tenancy of the farm, which he held for 36 years during which he took an active part in public affairs. Over a wide district, "Gannochan," as he was usually called, was a man of mark, and his services in various capacities were in great request. For 30 years, from 1847 to 1877, he acted as secretary to Ardoch Agricultural Society and took a great interest in the annual shows. He was a member of the Parochial Board of Muthill till Ardoch was formed into a parish in 1858, and a member of Ardoch School Board from 1872 to 1884. An elder in the Parish Church from 1858 to 1884, Mr Kinross officiated as Session Clerk for many years. In 1877 he was appointed a Justice of Peace for Perthshire on the recommendation of Lord Kinnaird, Lord-Lieutenant of the County. A staunch and consistant Liberal in politics, Mr Kinross has no sympathy with the socialist and syndicalist developments of modern Radicalism. Removing in 1881 to the farm of Hillend, in Clackmannanshire, Mr Kinross continued to take a fair share of public work, representing Clackmannan Parish as District Member of the County Council. He remained at Hillend till 1896 when he retired and took up residence at Causewayhead. While at Gannochan, Mr Kinross took a great interest in the national game of curling and he has many stories to tell of the early grand matches. At that time there were no railways, and the players had to find their way to the scene of the struggle as best they could. On the occasion of the first great match at Linlithgow, the curlers from the north of the Forth drove in a snowstorm from Stirling in five coaches. Mr Kinross was afterwards chosen as one of the umpires of the annual match at Carsebreck, along with the late Provost Murrie of Stirling, and acted in this capacity up till a few years ago. He was one of the curlers who formed the Scottish Central Curling Club, and was secretary of that Club from 1866 to 1886, when he was succeeded by Provost James Drysdale, Bridge of Allan. On 20th April, 1852, occurred the event the sixtieth anniversary of which was celebrated on Saturday, Mr Kinross being joined in wedlock to Elizabeth Stirling, daughter of a neighbouring farmer. Like her husband, Mrs Kinross enjoys remarkably good health, and it is hoped, may be spared for years to come. They have three sons and three daughters. The total number of descendants is twenty-seven. At the large family gathering, the best wishes were expressed for the health and happiness of the old couple, whose faculties are still unimpaired by advancing age, and who are so highly respected and esteemed by all who know them. They were the recipients of a large number of valuable presents. Along with a number of descendants, two sons and thee daughters were present, the third son, a farmer in Canada, being unable to join the company. Our portraits are from photos taken by Mr Robert Ferguson, St Margaret's, Causewayhead.13 |

Newspaper | DR. G. KELMAN, JR. PASSES ON The grim reaper struck hard at our city on Sunday last when he gathered to himself one of our best beloved and most useful citizens in the person of Dr George Kelman, Jr. Deceased had been suffering from internal trouble for nearly a year and for the past seven months was under the care of Dr McGuffin, of Calgary. He was bright and cheerful to the last and it was thought that he was improving in health but on Saturday complications set in and he passed away in the Fernie Hospital Sunday night. In the passing of Dr George Kelman Fernie people have suffered a real loss. He was a clever physician and surgeon and had the confidence of the whole community. He was always at the beck and call of the needy and they have lost a true friend. His bright and cheerful disposition made him a welcome visitor to the homes of those in trouble. He never lost his sunny smile, and no one we have known ever met death with a more cheerful manner. He was fully aware of his approaching end, but no one would have believed it from the welcome smile with which he greeted his old chums who visited him in his last hours. In his death our community has lost a great worker. Active in every public movement, he was an outstanding member of the local Rotary Club, the Elks Lodge, and the Masonic Order, and in those institutions he will be hard to replace. The funeral which took place from Christ Church on Wednesday was perhaps the largest ever held in Fernie. The people turned out en masse to bid him a last farewell. The unemployed association paid a fine tribute to the departed in heading the funeral procession with about four hundred of their members. The service was under the auspices of the local Masonic lodge and the members marched in a body to the grave. Rev Percivall conducted the services at the home and in the church. Dr Geo A E Kelman, LRCP and MRCS, England, was born in London, England, in 1886. He was educated at King's College and Westminster Hospital, London, where he graduated in 1911, receiving the above degrees. He came to Canada with his father and family in 1912. He practised in Lougheed and Hardesty, Alberta, with his father, and came to Fernie in 1923 where they were in partnership up to the time of his death. He married Miss E S Kinross, of Lougheed, in 1919. He is survived by his widow, two daughters, Mary and Jean; also his father and mother; one sister, Mrs H P Wilson, and one brother, Jack, of White Rock BC.14 |
