MarriageHe married Mary Bannister on 27 Nov 1798 in Fenton, Lincolnshire.
John's surname was spelled Dikes. Mary's name was spelled Bannister in the banns register and Bancaster in the marriage register. She was noted to be from Caythorpe.3
Research Note The Fenton parish registers at Find My Past only go to 1812. Found baptisms for Mary and Sarah, then no more for this couple.

Charles Carline1

#25525, (1821 - 1876)
FatherGeorge Carline2 (1800 - 1873)
MotherCharlotte Pask2 (1797 - 1872)

Children of Charles Carline and Emma Nelson

  • Charles Carline9 (1870 - )
  • Emma Carline13 (c 1872 - )
  • Ellen Carline13 (c 1875 - )

Life Events

BaptismCharles was baptized with the name Reuben on 10 Feb 1821 in Lincoln, Lincolnshire. The register noted that he was the natural [the term means illegitimate] daughter [sic] of George Caroline, a servant, & Charlotte Pask, a servant, both of St Johns Newport.2
(Witness) Note.On 25 January 1822, George Carline and his wife Charlotte and son Charles, age 12 months, were removed from the parish of Hackthorn to the parish of Greetwell. [This action was under the Poor Laws; if a person was unable to support himself he was removed to the parish responsible for him, usually his parish of birth. The information noted above was from an abstract. The original settlement examination would likely yield more details]1
1841 CensusA Charles Carline appeared on the 1841 Census of St Martin in the Fields, Westminster, Middlesex, at 369 Strand. He was 21, a male servant, and not born in Middlesex. Note that the 1841 census records ages rounded down to the nearest 5 years, does not record relationships, and only indicates whether or not the person was born in the county.3
MarriageThere is a likely marriage record on 8 Jan 1844 in Lewisham, Kent.
Details from the register: Charles Carline, full age, bachelor, gardener, residence Sydenham, father George Carline, labourer;
Mary Ann Webster, full age, spinster, Sydenham, father John Webster, labourer;
They were married in the parish church and the witnesses were John Jones and Elizabeth B---chett.4
Research Note Some puzzle pieces for Charles don't quite fit together yet. The marriage record has the correct father but Charles is recorded as a gardener. By the 1851 census he was a carver. And, who was Ellen born in 1837 with him in the 1851 census? She was perhaps Mary Ann's daughter.
1851 CensusCharles and Mary Ann appeared on the 1851 Census of Liberty of Saffron Hill, Finsbury, Middlesex, at 28 Kirby Street. Charles was 32, a Carver & Gilder, and was born in Lincoln. Mary Ann was 41, born in Lincolnshire. They had one daughter, Ellen (14, birthplace Hull Yorkshire). With them was Charles' brother John (13, scholar). They also had a visitor, Elizabeth Holt (unmarried, 29, public teacher, birthplace Leeds Yorkshire.)5
1861 CensusCharles and Mary Ann Carline appeared on the 1861 Census of Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire, at 10 George Street. Charles was 40, a Carver & Guilder, born in Lincoln Lincolnsh. Mary Ann was 50 and born in Halingham Lincoln Lincolnsh. With them was a visitor (Susan M Norton, 36, born Norfolk) and one lodger, a solicitor.6

Children of John Wardel and Anne Smith

  • Elizabeth Wardel+1 (1799 - )
  • Mary (-?-)3 (1804 - )
  • Susanna Wardel4 (1806 - )
  • John Wardel5 (1811 - )
  • Sarah Wardel6 (1813 - )
  • Ann Wardel7 (1820 - )

Life Events

Research Note The surname was spelled many ways in the records, such as Wardle, Wardel, Wardale, Wardal.
BirthJohn Wardel was born say 1775.
This is a guesstimate based on his marriage and may be way off.
MarriageJohn Wardal married Anne Smith on 24 Jan 1799 in North Kelsey, Lincolnshire.
The register noted that they were a bachelor and spinster and were married in the church after banns. They each signed with an X and the witnesses were ---ng Fa-- and Thos Ward.2
Research Note Besides the baptisms for 6 children of this couple in the North Kelsey register, there is also one for an Anna Wardel, daughter of William & Mary in 1802. There are no other Wardel families in the parish so perhaps the clerk made an error recording the parents' names and she is really a child of John and Ann.
