Newspaper | Published 18 Aug 1876 in the Otago Daily Times. SPECIAL TELEGRAMS from our own correspondent BALCLUTHA, August 17th. The remains of the late Mr George Hay, Hilly Park, Port Molyneux, were interred this afternoon in the Puerua Cemetery. The cortege was composed of about eighty horsemen and a number of wheeled vehicles. There were some Dunedin people present. It was an unusually large funeral for the locality.10 |
Newspaper | Published 18 Aug 1876 in the Clutha Leader. THE LATE MR GEORGE HAY It is with much regret that we announce the death of George Hay, Esq., Hilly Park, South Molyneux. Mr Hay had been seriously ill for many weeks, and it was well understood, that in all human probability, there could only be a fatal termination to the attack from which he suffered, but it was not anticipated that the end was so near. The eldest son, Mr William Hay, is at present in Australia on account of his own health, but the remaining sons, three in number, were called to their father's bedside some weeks ago. As day after day elapsed, however, some improvement, if only a temporary one, seemed to be taking place. So much was this the case that Mr John and Mr James Hay considered themselves perfectly justified in setting off for Riverton on the 11th inst. to see after some pressing business matters. They could scarcely have been well at their destination when their father's death occurred at 4 a.m. on Monday, the 14th inst. Mr Hay, as is well known, was one of the earliest settlers in the district. His energy of character, straightforward honorable conduct in all his dealings, and the prominent position, both with time and purse he was always ready to assume in any enterprise that seemed likely to conduce to the benefit of the district, caused him to be held in very high esteem when alive, and will cause the news of his death to be received with deep regret. He had long been an active member of the South Molyneux Road Board, and the Port Molyneux School Committee, and took his full share of the work in connection with these and other kindred institutions. He was a most obliging neighbor, ever ready to render assistance where the same was required. In Mr Hay, we, and many more lost a genial, true, and kind-hearted friend, whose place will not be easily filled. The funeral, which took place yesterday, was very largely attended, there being about 150 gentlemen present. Mrs Jane Hay, who passed away at Tomahapa on the 31st December in her ninety-sixth year, was born at Keith, in Banffshire, Scotland, in August 1812. Her maiden name was Jane Grant, her father being a prosperous stonemason in Keith. She was married to the late George Hay at Keith in 1838, and for some time remained there with her husband. Thence the family removed to London. Her eldest son William and her daughters Jessie and Jane, were born at Keith, while her sons George and John were born in England. In 1848 Mr and Mrs Hay decided to emigrate to New Zealand, and in October of that year the family sailed from London in the ship Ajax for Otago. Taiaroa heads were reached on the 8th January, and the emigrants landed at Port Chalmers on the 9th. At that time Port Chalmers consisted merely of a few huts or clay whares. The settlement was completely surrounded with bush, which also covered the whole of Otago Peninsula. The family remained at Port Chalmers in a tent for some six weeks, and sailed in a boat called "The Jumping Jackass" for Molyneux Bay. The Jumping Jackass was an almost open boat, somewhat larger than an ordinary fishing cutter. It had been built at Port Chalmers by a man named Roebuck, and nails being scarce at the time, the timber had been pieced together with pieces of hoop-iron cut in the form of spikes. The boat was not considered over safe. However, it was the best available. The crew consisted of three Maoris, and a Mr Nathaniel Chalmers (at one time well known about the Clutha) accompanied Mr and Mrs Hay, Mr Alex Chalmers (a brother of Mr Nat Chalmers) and two brothers named Fuller at the same time came overland on foot from Otago Harbour to the Molyneux. They attempted to bring a cow with them. This would have been of great service to Mrs Hay and her young family but, unfortunately it died (probably from tutu poisoning) during the journey on the hills above Coal Point. After leaving Port Chalmers the Jumping Jackass met with adverse winds and had to remain inside the Heads for some days. The first night was spent by the passengers without shelter amongst the rocks. Shelter, however was found for the succeeding nights at the accommodation house kept by a Mrs Scott near the Heads. The family landed at Willsher Bay early in March 1849, and were welcomed by Makariri, the Maori wife of Mr Willsher. Maoris at that time were numerous at the Bay, but they were still somewhat uncivilised. Besides Mr Willsher an Englishman named Thos Russell lived at the Bay. Shortly before the arrival of the Jumping jackass the Maoris under the old Chief Tongata had forcibly seized Mr Russell and robbed him of all his movable property. Lakitapu, the well-known chief who died a few years ago, was present at, but not a party to the robbery, and through his instrumentality the whole of Mr Russell's property was subsequently returned. On another ocasion Makariri was compelled to conceal herself in the bush for a day or two in order to avoid being killed by a Maori named Rawere, who had been pursuing her with murderous intent with a tomahawk. It was also related that Makariri herself, when in a "pet" with her husband, Willsher, was in the habit of retiring up the wide chimney of Willsher's hut and that Willsher on such an occasion would induce her to abandon her exalted retreat by lighting a smoky fire beneath her. The late Mrs Hay, however, would not vouch for the truth of this story, as she was ever most distinctly of the opinion that Makariri was the senior and more potent partner in the Willsher matrimonial firm. After the arrival of the party at Willsher Bay Messrs Fuller settled on land which is at present comprised in the Hilly Park property, and the Messrs Chalmers took up the land afterwards purchased by the late Mr David Dunn, of Romahapa. Mr and Mrs Hay for the first six months lived with the Messrs Chalmers, and afterwards returned to Willsher Bay, where they lived about four years. At that time there were no regular means of communication with Dunedin, and the settlers had often to depend for provisions on potatoes and what they could obtain in the way of native game, fish, and wild pigs. Pigeons and Kakas were speared by the natives with long manuka spears, and the settlers also used spears consisting of a steel or iron blade affixed to a wooden shaft for the purpose of killing wild pigs. For many months at one period the Hay family had no flour and no tea. As a poor substitute for tea an infusion of [---]ka leaves or biddi-biddi was used. After remaining at Willsher Bay for four years Mr Hay bought Fullers' property, and he and his family removed to what is now known as Hilly Park which became the headquarters of the family. After Mrs Hay's arrival in New Zealand a son James, a daughter Helen and a son Charles were born. James was born at Saddle Hill, near Dunedin, and his mother carried him from there on foot to Willsher Bay, crossing the intervening rivers in Maori mokis or any other available boat. The moki was a rough boat made from flax stalks. It was not watertight, and its occupant usually sat half submerged. Miss Helen Hay was the first white girl born in the Molyneux. Mr Geo Hay died in 1876. Of the sons and daughters Jane, John and Charles are now dead. Jane married the late Henry F Begg, of the Royal Lochnagar Distillery, Balmoral, Scotland. She enjoyed the gracious friendship of the late Queen Victoria, from whom she received many valuable gifts. On her death some fourteen years ago the London papers referred to the esteem which her late Majesty entertained towards her. John Hay died in August last. He was at the time of his death Chief Surveyor and Commissioner of Crown Lands for Southland. His friends in the Civil Service have recently erected in Invercargill a handsome monument to perpetuate his memory Of the children living, Helen is the wife of Mr Peter Miller, Dunedin, Jessie married Captain A Bell, and is resident at Perth, W.A., and George is a farmer at Glenomaru. James is Chief Draughtsman in the Survey Department at Napier, and the eldest son William has remained with his mother in the Clutha, where he has taken an active part in public affairs. At the time of her death the late Mrs Hay had over fifty grandchildren living and about 30 great-grandchildren. The funeral took place at Romahapa on Thursday, and was very largely attended by early settlers and other friends of the family. The Rev A M Dalrymple was the officiating clergyman.12 |

Item | In 1912, John Kinross and Elizabeth Graham Stirling celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary at Causewayhead.19 |
Newspaper | An unusual event of not a little interest took place in the quiet village of Causewayhead on Saturday last. This was the celebration of the "diamond wedding" of Mr John Kinross, J.P., and Mrs Kinross, St Leonards, who received the congratulations of their relatives, friends, and neighbours on the happy occasion. Mr Kinross, who has reached the long age of ninety and is still hale and hearty, is a native of Ardoch Parish, Perthshire, his father having been tenant of the farm of Gannochan on the Braco estate. In 1845 young Kinross succeeded to the tenancy of the farm, which he held for 36 years during which he took an active part in public affairs. Over a wide district, "Gannochan," as he was usually called, was a man of mark, and his services in various capacities were in great request. For 30 years, from 1847 to 1877, he acted as secretary to Ardoch Agricultural Society and took a great interest in the annual shows. He was a member of the Parochial Board of Muthill till Ardoch was formed into a parish in 1858, and a member of Ardoch School Board from 1872 to 1884. An elder in the Parish Church from 1858 to 1884, Mr Kinross officiated as Session Clerk for many years. In 1877 he was appointed a Justice of Peace for Perthshire on the recommendation of Lord Kinnaird, Lord-Lieutenant of the County. A staunch and consistant Liberal in politics, Mr Kinross has no sympathy with the socialist and syndicalist developments of modern Radicalism. Removing in 1881 to the farm of Hillend, in Clackmannanshire, Mr Kinross continued to take a fair share of public work, representing Clackmannan Parish as District Member of the County Council. He remained at Hillend till 1896 when he retired and took up residence at Causewayhead. While at Gannochan, Mr Kinross took a great interest in the national game of curling and he has many stories to tell of the early grand matches. At that time there were no railways, and the players had to find their way to the scene of the struggle as best they could. On the occasion of the first great match at Linlithgow, the curlers from the north of the Forth drove in a snowstorm from Stirling in five coaches. Mr Kinross was afterwards chosen as one of the umpires of the annual match at Carsebreck, along with the late Provost Murrie of Stirling, and acted in this capacity up till a few years ago. He was one of the curlers who formed the Scottish Central Curling Club, and was secretary of that Club from 1866 to 1886, when he was succeeded by Provost James Drysdale, Bridge of Allan. On 20th April, 1852, occurred the event the sixtieth anniversary of which was celebrated on Saturday, Mr Kinross being joined in wedlock to Elizabeth Stirling, daughter of a neighbouring farmer. Like her husband, Mrs Kinross enjoys remarkably good health, and it is hoped, may be spared for years to come. They have three sons and three daughters. The total number of descendants is twenty-seven. At the large family gathering, the best wishes were expressed for the health and happiness of the old couple, whose faculties are still unimpaired by advancing age, and who are so highly respected and esteemed by all who know them. They were the recipients of a large number of valuable presents. Along with a number of descendants, two sons and thee daughters were present, the third son, a farmer in Canada, being unable to join the company. Our portraits are from photos taken by Mr Robert Ferguson, St Margaret's, Causewayhead.19 |
Tax List | John Kinross, retired farmer, appeared on the 1915 valuation roll for St Leonards, Causewayhead, Logie Parish, Stirling, The owner of the house was George May and John was the tenant and occupier. The annual rent was £22.20 |

Isabella Eadie1,2
#393, (bt 1787 - 1791 - bt 1843 - 1851)
Children of Isabella Eadie and John Kinross |
|
|
Life Events | |
Birth | Isabella Eadie was born between 1787 and 1791 in Perthshire.3 |
Research Note | What are Isabella's origins? There is a birth entry for Isabel, daughter of Donald Eadie, a tenant farmer, & Jean Faichney at Beny in Muthill parish; the parish records are spotty about this time so it's hard to be sure this is the only Isabella in the area. Unfortunately she died before the 1851 census, which would have given her parish of birth and before civil registration began in 1855, which would have recorded her parents' names. If a marriage record can be found, that might give a few more details about her. There was also an Isabella Eadie, daughter of James Eadie, a merchant, & Mary Finlayson, baptised in Dunblane in 1792. I have not yet researched this family. Isabella who married John Kinross named her first daughter Jean which adds weight to Jean Faichney being her mother. |
Marriage | She married John Kinross.2 |
1841 Census | John and Isabella Kinross appeared on the 1841 Census of Muthill, Perthshire, at Gannochan. John was 55, a Farmer, and was born in this county. Isabella was 50 and born in this county. They had two children with them, Jean and John, both 15 and born in Perthshire. [Ages were rounded down in the 1841 census]. Also in the household were three female servants. In a separate house at Gannochan were five male servants, ranging in age from 10 to 20.3 |
