CATHERINE (KATE) McKECHNIE (10/23-1857-7/9/1929)

In 1873, when she was 15 years old she went from her home near Priceville, Ont. To Toronto, where she worked in domestic service. Two years later in 1875 she went out to the then small pioneer city of Winnipeg, Manitoba, where she served as a lady’s companion and nurse. About 1888, she came back to Priceville, Ontario and for the next year or two worked at dress-making in partnership with her cousin, Maggie Ferguson. She then went to Carllon, Ontario (near Montreal) with the Rev. J. L. Gardner family and after a short time went from there to Chicago. While in Chicago, was engaged as governess and nurse to Jack Peabody, young son of the well-known steel magnate and also served as governess with another wealthy family and while thus employed traveled widely with these families, going to their summer homes on Long Island, N.Y., Jakil Isle. Off the coast of Georgia, and at Lake Geneva, Wisc. and on other journeys made by the family. After this she returned home for a year and in 1897 came west to Dakota with her mother and sister, Maggie and brothers, John and Peter, all of whom filed on homesteads at Calio, N.D. in June of that year.
In November she relinquished her claim when she was married to Duncan McLean from Paysley, Ont., whom she had known since girlhood days in Ontario. He was then a widower with three children, whom she raised. Living on his farm at Antler, N. C. After her husband’s death in 1902 she continued on the farm there for three or four years, after which she came to Calvin and spent the remaining years of her life with her brother Neil and family. She returned to Ontario to spend a couple of years with her brother, John and family and in 1918 came to Calvin and spent the remaining years of her life with her brother, Peter and family till she passed away in 1928. She was an active member o the Baptist church. During the later part of her life she became very hard of hearing but always took an active interest in those about her and was especially ardent in maintaining the ties of friendship with distant relatives and neighbors with whom she had become aquatinted in former years. (Incidentally, had the framework of this family tree been together before her death. Her keen memory could have supplied much data that is missing.)9

1900 CensusDuncan and Catherine McLain [sic] appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Bottineau County, North Dakota, at Township 164 Range 81, enumerated 6 Jun 1900. Duncan was 47, born in January 1853 in Canada, parents born in Scotland, immigrated to the US in 1890, naturalized, and was a farmer who owned his farm free. Catherine was 42, born October 1857 in Canada, father born in Scotland, mother in Canada, immigration date unknown. They had been married 17 years [sic] and it was recorded that Catherine was the mother of 3 children, all of whom were still living. Their children were Duncan (16), John N (14), Lottie (8), and Harry (5). The two oldest were born in Canada and attended school.7

OBITUARY.
MR THOMAS SMART.
Much regret will be felt by old residents both of the town and district that the illness under which Mr Thomas Smart has been laboring for the past two months has had a fatal termination. It will be remembered that the deceased became a patient in the Ararat Hospital a few weeks back suffering from Bright's disease, and typhoid fever supervening, he gradually sank and succumbed to the attack at an early hour yesterday morning. The deceased, who was a native of the district being born at Moyston, was 56 years of age. Though by trade a plasterer he devoted his attention mainly to mining, and he was an astute and persistent prospector, to whose endeavors in connection with the development of the mining industry of the neighborhood, the district is not a little indebted. He had a knowledge of the varied minerological resources of the whole place which was unequalled, and his name will be indissolubly, linked with various lodes and reefs which in years to come are sure to attract the attention of investors and be the means of adding greatly to the mineral wealth of the State. Impressed by the fact that practically no crosscutting work had been done at the great reef which at one time made Moyston famous, and which is certain at some future date to again bring the old somnolent village in prominence, he prospected some years ago on the east side of the Campbell's reef, and cutting a rich but thin quartz lode he worked it to the water level. The fact that the stone was thin, however, stood in the way of its further developnent. At Moore's Reef, Lexington, Armstrongs and Bridle Hill he also did a lot of prospecting work, and at the last named place mined for some years a fine quartz reef, the possession of which he retained until his death. Mr Smart also established the fact that manganese exists at Mount Chalambar, and Mount Ararat in what is believed to be payable quantity, whilst he found other metals, and ores, the presence of which might but for his well maintained efforts might have escaped observation for years. The deceased leaves a family of fifteen, the youngest being only four years of age, whilst three of his sons, John, James, and Goulburn are at the front. He was twice married, his second wife surviving him. The remains of the deceased are to be interred in the Ararat Cemetery this afternoon.6
