Life Events

BirthJohn McLean was born circa 1821 in Ontario.
Date determined by the fact that his older brother Archibald was born in Mull in 1819 and John was born in Canada. His next younger brother, Allan was born in 1823. John's reported age varied markedly in census and other records.5
MarriageHe married Flora McKinnon circa 1850.6

1851/2 CensusJohn and Flora McLean appeared on the 1852 Census of Vaughan Township, York County, Ontario, enumerated Jan 1852. John was age 30 next birthday, a farmer, born in Canada, Kirk of Scotland. Flora was age 20 next birthday, born in Canada [ditto from line above] and Kirk of Scotland. They lived with their son Duncan in a one story log house with John's parents. Living nearby were Flora's parents.4
1861 CensusJohn and Flora McLean appeared on the 1861 Census of Vaughan Township, York County, Ontario. John was a labourer, born in Upper Canada, Church of Scotland, age 40, and married. Flora was born in Scotland, Church of Scotland, age 27 and married. Their children were Duncan (9), Mary (7), Angus (5), Hector (5), and Laughlin (3). The family lived in a 1 story log house. They owned 2 cows and 4 sheep valued at $52.7
Residence-Moved Between 1861 and 1863, the McLean family moved to Bruce Township. They were in Vaughan in the 1861 census and their daughter Christina was buried in Bruce in 1863.5
1871 CensusJohn and Flora appeared on the 1871 Census of Bruce Township, Bruce County, Ontario. John was 48, born in Ontario, Church of Scotland, Scotch origin, farmer and married. Flora was 35, born in Scotland, C Presbyterian, Scotch origin, married, and unable to write. With them were Duncan (18), Mary (17), Hector (14), Angus (14), Lachlan (12), Christy (9), Cathrine (7), Archibald (5), and Christy Bella (3.)8
Research Note Although Christy, age 9, is with John & Flora McLean in the 1871 census, she is probably not their daughter. They have a daughter named Christina born circa 1868, shortly after this Christy. One possibility is that she is a daughter of John's widowed brother Hugh.

Flora was 48, born Scotland, C Presbyterian, of Scotch origin. Their children at home were Hector (25, laborer), Angus (25, clerk), Lochlon (23, laborer), Catherine (18), Christiana (12), John (9), Flora (6), Alexander (4), and Isabella (1).
