Research Note

George Hedley Tucker appears to have abandoned his family. He was in San Francisco by the time of the US 1910 census. He was also there in the 1920 and 1930 census years, and died there in 1934. His estate was proved in England by William Love Tucker in 1937.

Details from the certificate: Mary Fernee, age 88 years, Gentlewoman, died of Decay of Nature, informant Mary Ann French or Finch of High Street, Highgate, who signed with an X.⁴

Anecdote

Over 60 years later, this story about Mary's funeral was still being recounted.
James Fernee told of a visit c1901 to his cousin Anthony Storey's daughter Mrs. Higgins, baker and confectioner in Hornsey. He wrote, "In the course of conversation Mrs. Higgins related of a funeral which took place at Hornsey, I think it was Father's cousin Anthony Storey's grand mother, she was a Fernee, however the remarkable but the usual [sic] thing was, that six sons were the mourners, young and elder were all baldheaded, that is a sure brand of the family, I have never yet known any other."⁵
