Fancy ball given by Hon. Mrs. Byng on April 1st [1830]

Captain Bonnycastle, represented 1st a Magician, and afterwards Earl of Sussex, accompanied by Mrs Bonnycastle, in the most superb dress, we ever beheld; 'twas indeed truly magnificent.
The whole scene was like one of fairyland, most brilliant and imposing; the splendour of the spectacle was much increased by numerous uniforms and regimentals.

1911 CensusH.E. and Mrs Rudd appeared on the 1911 Census of Edmonton, Alberta, at 375 Kirkness, enumerated 1 Jun 1911. The census for this family was quite bungled - awful handwriting and questionable names and data (such as the entire family born in Ontario). By the family structure and the correct bits, I am quite sure it is them...perhaps Hope and Sheila answered the enumerator's questions! Bert was 37, born May 1874 in Ontario, of Irish origin, Canadian, Anglican, [occupation unreadable] Provincial Government employee, working 52 weeks at 60 hours per week, wages in 1910 were $1000. Regimental No. 2678, ex-Corporal Herbert Edwin Rudd

At the age of 68, ex-Cpl Herbert E. Rudd died on Feb 3, 1941. A former resident of Clonmellon, County Meath, Ireland, Mr Rudd was the son of Rev. I [sic] Rudd. He joined the Force at Regina on May 30, 1891, when only eighteen years of age. In December, 1896, he was promoted to the rank of Corporal. Before taking his discharge in August, 1899, he saw service at Bennett, Y.T., under Supt S.B. Steele, O.C. of "B" Division, Upper Yukon district. After leaving the Force, he moved to Indian Head, Assiniboia District, N.W.T. (now Saskatchewan).

Cpl Rudd sustained a severe hernia in June, 1898, when he slipped while getting into a boat at Tagish. He had just returned from a gruelling 600-mile trip in which he captured four Marsh Lake Indian murderers. In consequence of the hardships he endured on this journey, he was very much run down, having suffered an attack of typhoid fever that placed him at Death's door for many weeks.

He was known to ex-Asst Commr R. Field and ex-Inspr W.J.D. Dempster, who attended the funeral on Feb. 5 at New Westminster. Two serving members of the Force also attended, and flowers were sent by the R.N.W.M.P. Veterans' Association.31

For the wedding breakfast the table was graced with red carnations.
Mr Gordon Inkster attended his brother. Mrs Smart was matron of honor, wearing a black and white georgette ensemble.
Only the immediate relatives were present, Mr Inkster, Sr., and Miss Muriel Inkster, of Raymore, Sask; Mrs Wright of Winnipeg, grandmother of the bride; Herbert Smart of Watson; Mr and Mrs Verne Campbell of Disley, Sask, and Mrs Crossley of Watson.

Abigail Marion1

#299, (s 1765 - a 1802)

Children of Abigail Marion and John Inkster

Life Events

Overview
* * * * *

Abigail Marion is a bit of a mystery. We know that she married John Inkster in 1788 in Stromness, Orkney. There they had six children, born in 1789 & 1791, then 1798, 1800, and 1802. One son James likely died as an infant given that the next son was also named James (a common custom) and son William went to Canada but the fates of the rest are as yet undiscovered. Also unknown is where John and Abigail were before and after they had their family.

The surname Marion and the forename Abigail are not typical Orcadian names. Perusing the book Orkney Surnames by Gregor Lamb, the closest sounding Orkney surname to MARION is MERRIMAN. I did not see any instances of Merriman in the Stromness parish registers of that era so a possible explanation is that 'Marion' is just how the clerk recorded Merriman. Merriman is a surname long associated with the parish of Birsay.

Where did Abigail come from? I would very much like to know her story.

BirthAbigail Marion was born say 1765.
This date is a guesstimate that puts her age at marriage at 23 and at the birth of her last known child at age 37.
MarriageShe married John Inkster on 29 Apr 1788 in Stromness, Orkney.
The parish register stated that they were both in this parish.1

Ellen was born in 1889 in Battersea, Surrey. Her older siblings were Emma, John, and Edward. Younger ones were Florence and Charles Richard. Ellen's Irish paternal grandmother was named Ellen and our Ellen had at least four first cousins with that name as well! Ellen's father died just before her 14th birthday. The following year, 1904, she emigrated with her mother and siblings to Dauphin, Manitoba, Canada. She was enumerated twice in the 1906 census - at home with her family and with her brother Charles at a neighbouring farm. The family moved to a homestead near Watson, Saskatchewan. There Ellen met and married William Thomas Smart, a clerk and farmer. In 1913, Ellen traveled with her two children and her sister-in-law May Smart for two months in England. In 1921, she and her husband traveled to England to see family. In all, they had two sons and two daughters. The Smarts retired to Vancouver.

Overview

James was born and lived in the rural parish of Harlow, Essex. He was an agricultural labourer who married at age 21 or 22. He and Eliza had seven children who grew up to be servants or agricultural labourers and also married at early ages. James lived to the age of 81.

There are several other Cordell families in Harlow and nearby parishes - likely James' siblings and their children. I have not yet sorted them out.

Research Note George Cordell & James Cordell.
I have found that a descendant of George Cordell, born c1793 in Harlow, shares two segments of DNA with a descendant [me] of James Cordell who was born in Harlow in 1804. So, they have a common ancestor. George and James might be first cousins or more distantly related. I do not think they are brothers because James' parents were too young to have George in 1793. Harlow parish registers from this era do not survive.

BirthHe was born on 25 Aug 1804 in Harlow, Essex.1

MarriageHe married Eliza Forster on 24 Nov 1827 in Harlow.
They were married by banns with the consent of their parents. Eliza signed with an X. The witness was Susanna Forster.1
1841 CensusJames and Eliza Cordell appeared on the 1841 Census of Harlow, Essex, at Burrs Farm. James was 35, an Ag Lab, and was born in the county of Essex. His wife Eliza was not present. The children were John (10), Eliza (8), Elizabeth (6), Sarah (3), and George (1). There was a housekeeper, Frances Thurgood, 65. The apparent head of household was Rachel Wentworth, 85, not born in Essex. Note that the 1841 census records ages rounded down to the nearest 5 years, does not record relationships, and only indicates whether or not the person was born in the county.2
1851 CensusJames and Eliza appeared on the 1851 Census of Harlow, Essex, at Burr's Farm. James was 46 and an agricultural labourer. Eliza was 42. Their children at home were John (20, ag lab), Sarah (13, scholar), George (11, errand boy), and Emma (9, scholar). They were all born in Harlow.3
1861 CensusJames Cordell appeared on the 1861 Census of Harlow, Essex, at Foster Street. James was age 55, married, an ag lab, and born in Harlow. No one else was with him. There was an enumerator's note that 1 female in the district was away visiting her daughter [may have been his wife Eliza].4
1871 CensusJames and Eliza Cordell appeared on the 1871 Census of Harlow, Essex, at Foster Street. James was 66, an agricultural laborer, and was born in Harlow. Eliza was 59 and born in Harlow.5

Newspaper Published 28 Jun 1830 in the The London Times.
1830. "Robert Fernee, late of Perseverance-terrace, Church-street, Bethnal-green-road, butcher and cowkeeper, was opposed by Mr. Barry on behalf of Messrs. Charrington, brewers. It appeared that the insolvent became security for his brother to the opposing creditors by accepting a bill for 50l., on which he was afterwards arrested. He then gave bail, sold a cow and a cart, and deposited the lease of his premises with one of his creditors; after which he rendered to prison. The Chief Commissioner said this case came within the section of the act of Parliament relating to the making away with property after the arrest; but the Court thought that full justice would be done by remanding the insolvent for a period of ten weeks from the date of filing his petition."9

Note.Robert's brother George had gone into bankruptcy about this time. George was recorded as a victualler, which fits with having a brewer as a creditor.

1891 CensusBessie M Penny appeared on the 1891 Census of Wrington, Somerset, at The Grove. She was 18 years old, born in Pitminster, and was a Housemaid in the Edmond D and Maria B Bourdillon household. They employed a cook, parlourmaid, ladiesmaid, housemaid, kitchen maid & page. A gardener & family were in a separate house.5
Note.Parlourmaids were responsible for the reception rooms such as drawing room, dining room, morning room, library. She would dust and sweep each day, clear out the grates and light the fire in each room. She would also wash woodwork, clean lamps and polish tables. The chambermaid had similar duties in the bedrooms. Since there was a parlourmaid designated in the 1891 census return, I imagine that Bessie Mary had the duties of the chambermaid.

In the 1901 census, Bessie was a parlourmaid. She was staying with her brother Charles when the census was taken so we unfortunately cannot see the makeup of the household that employed her.

A maid had to provide her own uniform - a print dress, a black dress, and several aprons - before she could be hired as a servant. The print dress and a coarse apron were worn in the morning and the black dress and white apron in the afternoon.6

With them was an adopted son, Alfred Dunsby who was 14 years old, born in Manitoba, of English origin, and was a clerk in a drug store. Item.

From Margaret A Christy's Quest for Centenarians:
In Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, I visited a beautiful woman in her own home, Bessie Mary Feltham (nee Penny), young at 107 years. She was wearing an exquisitely lace-trimmed blouse and a full, flowing skirt. She was every inch a lady and quite lovely, graciously receiving all guests from her wheelchair.

Bessie dozed once or twice while I was sketching her. During these sleepy interludes her daughter, Mabel H Feltham, a retired school teacher, talked about her mother.
Bessie had had an unusually quiet life in her earlier years. Blagden Hill, small village near Taunton, Somerset, England, was where her husband-to-be found her. He had returned hom for a visit from his pioneering on the northern prairies around Gladstone, Manitoba. Bessie was fascinated by his stories and was persuaded to come to Canada with him. They arrived in Winnipeg, April 18, 1901; Bessie Penny and William Feltham were married five days later.

Winnipeg was a small but very important center at that time; streets were not paved, sidewalks were made of wooden planks and water was pumped from a corner well. From being a small busy town, Winnipeg has grown into a big important city, affectionately known as "The Gateway to the West." The Canadian Pacific Railway yards (the world's largest privately owned), and the Winnipeg Commodity Exchange (community center for grains), contribute to the importance of Winnipeg today.

On her 100th birthday, three daughters, two sons, their spouses and offspring, as well as countless friends gathered from many points in Canada and from as far away as New Zealand to celebrate.

Bessie was a good neighbor and a loving wife and mother. She loved to have friends drop in for afternoon tea, and served them thinly sliced buttered bread or scones on fine English china, "the English way." The day Terri and I visited Bessie we were served tea with an American touch...apple pie.

Bessie's quiet personality and delightful sense of humor remained constant through the years. Bessie lived another year after our meeting, forty-three years after she had lost her husband, William. She passed away quietly, as she had lived.19

DeathBessie died on 30 Sep 1980 in 354 Oakwood Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba.20,21
