Four of their 100 acres were classified as improved land. The produce raised by the Bonnycastles in the previous year was:

Note.Received a letter from [the first Canadian Prime Minister] John A Macdonald in response to a note from Bonnycastle regarding help with a political campaign. They likely met one another when studying law at Osgoode Hall in Toronto. [My great grandmother Lyall Bonnycastle claimed Sir John A & HWJB were 'bosom buddies']. [There was an Ontario election that year but I have not found a list of candidates or results.]

My dear Bonnycastle
I was glad to see your hand writing once more after so many years intermission and to notice from it that you are as strong as ever. How many years have passed since we knew each other, and only to think we have not met for forty years! You must carry your Riding for the Local and I shall do all I can to help you. When Kieler comes down next week I shall talk all the subjects mentioned in your note over with him. I can scarcely fancy that you have a son big enough to be a Township Councillor and all the rest of it. I see he bears the same name as your good old father Sir Richard. Could not you take a run down during the Session? I should be very glad to see you.
Yours faithfully
John A Macdonald

Hy Bonnycastle Esq
Seymour O.15

Note.Lottie and Reno had accumulated over 1500 acres near the town of Outlook. In 1928 they decided to separate and drew up a property settlement agreement, agreeing to live apart for one year and if either desired after that time, to have a peaceful divorce. In that event, Lottie was to receive a total of $6000 plus 5% of all oil royalties if there was any oil production.

Lottie received $1000. They divorced 3 October 1931 and Reno remarried that day. Oil was discovered in 1957 and Reno died in 1958. Then Lottie successfully claimed her portion of the royalties.

The legal case makes interesting reading and I won't summarize all of it - see the source citation. Here is one quote from a letter from Lottie to Reno after he proposed making a new agreement.

"Send me a copy of the agreement and settlement and if I don't like it I'll cancel just as sure as hell, because I'm satisfied to take no less than that other agreement called for. Including that oil right. I surely was worth that much through all those hard years."6

Father and Son Taken in Death
Prominent Williston Business Man and Father Die This Week--Entire City and Community Mourns Loss
A curtain of gloom was cast over the city of Williston on Wednesday of this week when First Lt Frank Plummer, assistant cashier of the Bank of Williston was taken in death by pneumonia. His father, Mr G W Plummer who was living with him died Sunday evening from a stroke of paralysis. Mr Plummer the father was born in Illinois and was seventy-four years of age at the time of his death. He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic having served for two years in the civil war.
Francis Benjamin Wilkinson Plummer was born at Chester, Iowa, on March 19th 1890 and lived on a farm there with his parents till he was ten years of age when the family moved to Spring Valley, Minn. It was at Spring Valley where Frank got his education and entered into the work of life by clerking in several of the stores there and later on entering a position with one of the banks there. From Spring Valley Frank came to Williston, accepting a position with the Ross Davidson Banking Co., for whom he worked for some time before accepting a position here with the Citizens National Bank (now the First National Bank.) After working with this bank for a number of years he went on the road for L F Dow & Co, with whom he remained till June, 1917, when he returned to Williston and accepted a position with the Drake-Ballard Co. When this concern opened the Bank of Williston here Frank became assistant cashier which position he held at the time of his death. Frank was married May 10, 1917, at Grand Forks, N D, to Miss Eileen Barry. Besides his wife he leaves to mourn his loss three sisters, Miss Mable Plummer and Mrs A G Hicks, of St Paul, Minn, and Miss Laura Plummer of Lima Springs, Iowa. Two brothers, Capt H W Plummer of the 52nd Inf, now stationed in France and Capt G A Plummer at the head of a military hospital at Cleveland, Ohio, and his mother, Mrs G M Plummer who was at his bedside at the time of his death.
The funeral services of both father and son were held this morning from the home of Mrs Edwin A Palmer and the bodies were sent from here to Lima Springs, Iowa, the home of the Plummer family.
Frank was First Lieutenant of the Williston Home Guards and was treasurer of the Williston school board. A more business like and public spirited young man could not be found in Williston and it is impossible with mere words to do justice to his character and loss of his being in our community. The grief stricken family has the sincere sympathies of the community with them in their hour of sadness.4

FATAL SEQUEL TO ACCIDENT
--------
Death of Mr J. H. Turnbull
--------
NORTH SHIELDS UNDERTAKER

The death has taken place, under very tragic circumstances, of Mr James Henry Turnbull, of Bell's Terrace, Albion Road, North Shields. He was the head of the firm of Messrs. E. Turnbull and Son, funeral furnishers and taxi proprietors.
Mr Turnbull's death took place yesterday in Leeds General Hospital, following an accident in which four people were injured.
The three injured men were Mr A Greer, of Sandyford Road, Newcastle, Mr Arthur Cragg, nephew of the deceased, who has lived with Mr Turnbull's family since he was a baby, and Harold Glen (25), of Ellands Yard, Walmgate, York.
The latter was driving the lorry which came into collision with the car containing Mr Turnbull's party. Mr Cragg was driving the car.
The accident occurred on the Brainham cross-roads on the Leeds---York main road, and Mr Turnbull, Mr Greer and Mr Glen were all taken to the Leeds Hospital and detained. Mr Cragg was able to return home after treatment.
Mr Turnbull died at 8 a.m. yesterday, after an improvement in his condition the previous night had given hope of his recovery.
He was 60 years of age and had never had a day's illness in his life, actively controlling his business until his death. He was on his way to Leicester on business when he collision occurred.
His circle of friends was very wide, although he took no part in public or social affairs. Horses were his hobby, and he kept a stable attached to his garage.
FOND OF HORSES

A valuable string of hunters were always stabled there, and throughout his life he had a horse of his own. He rode to point-to-point meetings and steeplechases all over Northumberland and Durham, and he also to the Morpeth hounds.
At one time he had a number of racing horses which he entered for races.
Despite his great fondness for horses, he realised that this was the age of motor-cars. His business as a funeral furnisher, now 62 years old, is well-equipped with the finest and most up-to-date vehicles. It was Mr Turnbull who introduced cars into the firm, and in fact, he owned a car as far back as 1907.
A Rolls Royce and Lincoln are included in his fleet of taxis, and these were used by Queen Maud, of Norway, a few months ago when she arrived in England.
Mr Turnbull is survived by his widow, a son and a daughter.8

ProbateHis estate was proved on 16 Mar 1935. Entry from the probate calendar:
TURNBULL James Henry of 2 Bell's-terrace North Shields died 27 January 1935 at Leeds. Probate Newcastle-upon-Tyne 16 March to Ann Alice Turnbull widow and Edward James Turnbull company secretary. Effects £2212 7s 8d.7

TRAVELLER AND ARTIST
-------
Death of North Shields Man
-------

The death has occurred of Mr John Pearson Turnbull, of 99 Linskill Terrace, North Shields, a well known artist and traveller.
He died yesterday at Leazes Hospital, after an illness. He was 62 years of age.
Mr Turnbull was formerly in partnership of a funeral furnisher with his brother, Mr James Turnbull, of E. Turnbull and Son, North Shields.
He retired from business in order to devote himself wholly to painting, and went to live at Elsdon, where he had his residence for many years.
Most of his painting was done abroad, Algeria, Majorca, Morocco and Spain being his favourite countries. He usually left England in the winter, returning in the summer to complete sketches made when away. His medium was oils.
Mr Turnbull sedulously avoided the usual tourist routes and hotels. He lived in the native parts of the places he visited in order to experience the characteristic elements of the locale and people.
Native types, in particular, fascinated him, and he painted many portraits of this kind.
His attraction to Spain and the Moorish countries, however, was primarily due to a deep feeling for the virile quality and the sunlight there.
Mr Turnbull exhibited at Birmingham, but mostly abroad. On two occasions he was asked by the Canadian Government to contribute to exhibitions of the work of representative British painters.
He had a picture in circulation by the Museums' Association.
It would be difficult to label his work as belonging to any particular school, as his technique was frequently adjusted to express the different qualities he felt in the pieces.
Mr Turnbull leaves a widow, a son and daughter.
He expressed a wish to be cremated, and those rites will be observed on Wednesday morning. The funeral will be private.9

A LOCAL CHARACTER.

The late John Pearson Turnbull, who died at the Leazes Hospital, Newcastle, last week was a very eccentric fellow. One could hardly get into his cottage at Elsdon for pictures. They were everywhere---on the floor, on the table, window ledge, mantel-piece, bed---everywhere. The last time I visited him my wife, two daughters, and a niece from Canada were with me, and I said to Jack (as he was known to all Shieldsmen): "Come on out and paint and the girls will put this darned place in some sort of order." So off we went, leaving the girls to tidy up, and prepare some tea.
We were only a few yards from the door when Jack declared: "There are no pictures in Elsdon." "Nonsense," was my reply, "you are too near to them to see them, that is all." And soon we sat side by side before a rather pretty little composition, comprising the vicarage (an old Pele Tower), a few cottages, a splash of village green, with a few trees.
* * *
A PURPLE PASSION.
Jack had a pecularity: He saw purple everywhere. It did not matter in the least what the subject was, purple was the prevailing tone. I see grey and blue where Jack saw vivid purple. As we wandered home, our sketches completed, we were hailed by a prominent villager: "Been paintin' ?" he queried, and on being told that we had, he said "Let's hev a look." So the two pictures were produced for his inspection. "There ye are, Mr Turnbull," he said at once, "Aa've telt ye many a time there's nee porple in Elsdon, and this friend of yours evidently agrees with me. That's Elsdon as Aa see it, that is," he said, pointing to my not very brilliant effort. Jack laughed most heartily.

He was a vegetarian, and told me that very day that he could exist on ten shillings a week nicely. "Yes," I said, "and a big steak and chips, and a pint of good ale would do you all the good in the word!" He was a teetotaller, and a non-smoker, too, but despite these drawbacks in a companion (as a general rule) he was excellent company, and I loved the way he used to say "regardez" when he wanted you to look at anything.

He had the most perfect teeth I ever saw, and he used to boast that he never cleaned them. His art did not reach a very high standard, he was too erratic, and his drawing was not too true, but some of his portraits, if you took them from him soon enough, were quite good. Girls of a Spanish type, who appealed to him, he portrayed quite well. Jack's portraits were good in an unfinished state. He got a likeness quickly, and then spoiled his picture by what I described to him as "mucking it about." Again came his infectious laugh.
* * *

A MEMENTO.
In my drawing room hangs a Morrocan scene from his brush. I question whether he did anything better. Very colourful and pleasing, but not well drawn. It will serve as a memento of our fellow townsman, who had many excellent qualities, eccentric though he undoubtedly was.10
