Mrs. John Simpson, Prominent in Rebecca Order, Succumbs to Illness

Catherine Simpson, wife of John Simpson, 246 Ruby street, pioneer resident of this city, well known and highly esteemed in Rebecca and Odd Fellows' circles, died Christmas evening at Grace hospital following an illness in her 71st year. She was born in Port Elgin, Ont., and came to Winnipeg 51 years ago. In 1884 she was married to John Simpson, who for many years has been associated with the wholesale grocery trade.
She was an active and devoted member of Home street United church and for many years took an active part in Queen Esther Rebecca Lodge, having been the recipient of the highest honors of that organization. Her loving disposition and beautiful character endeared her to a large circle of friends.
In addition to her husband she is survived by one daughter, Mrs Dr J R Gutheridge, Bellville, Ont., and five sons, Harold, Detroit; Percy, Tullis, Sask; J Fred, Los Angeles, Cal; Lester, Toronto, and Albert E, Montreal. A son, W.A. was killed overseas in the Great War.
Funeral services will be held at 2.30 pm Thursday at the A B Gardiner Funeral home, following which interment will be made in the family plot in Elmwood cemetary. Rev Hugh MacFarlane, of Home street United church, will officiate.18

1901 CensusWilliam and Flora Simpson appeared on the 1901 Census of Carman, Manitoba. William was born 5 April 1865 in Ontario, age 35, Scotch origin, Presbyterian, and was a hotel keeper. Flora was 25 and born 10 May 1875 in Ontario. With them were William's children William Jr (11), Winnifred (9), and Alma (6). There were 19 lodgers (one of whom was a James D Simpson, 43) and 3 domestics.2

Wm Simpson, of the Roblin house, Winnipeg, met with a bad accident at the Starkey house on Tuesday night. After supper he went up to his room to get his coat, and the hall way being dark, in a mistake he opened a door leading downstairs to the dining room, instead of his bedroom door. He stepped on to the stairs, and losing his balance, fell forward down the steps, receiving a number of bad bruises as well as being badly shaken up -- Carman Standard.7
 
1906 CensusThey appeared on the 1906 Census of Winnipeg, Manitoba, at Roblin Hotel, enumerated 24 Jun 1906. Flora's name was scribbled over and looks like it says Mary. William was 40 and was born in Ontario. His wife was 31, born in Ontario. Children with them were William (16), Alame (12), Flora I (2), and Clarenc (born in June). They had two horses.
Also with them were 20 servants, from Manitoba, Ontario, Galicia, Sweden, Ireland and England. Sixteen people were boarding at the hotel on census night.8 
1911 CensusWilliam and Florence [sic] appeared on the 1911 Census of Winnipeg, Manitoba, at Grand Union Hotel. Note: the enumerator failed to record year of birth for many families. William was born in April in Scotland, immigrated in 1878 or 79, age 46, occupation Hotel Keeper, and had $5000 life insurance costing $75. There were two hotel keepers at this hotel. Florence was born in June in Scotland, age 32. Their children were May Elma (16), Floyd MacClane? (7), Wilbert Clare (5), Edwin Ray (3), and Florence Muriel (18 days? - unclear.)9 
1916 CensusWilliam and Florence [sic] appeared on the 1916 Census of Winnipeg, Manitoba, enumerated 1 Jun 1916. William was 47, born in Ontario, occupation Hotrman [writing difficult to interpret]. Florence was 33, born in Ontario. Their children were Floyd (12), Clare (10), Ray (8), and Muriel (5). The family was Presbyterian.10 
1921 CensusFlorence [sic] appeared on the 1921 Census of Winnipeg, Manitoba, at 211 Aubrey. She rented her 6 room wood house for $40/month. Flora was a widow, age 39 [sic], born in Ontario, parents born in Scotland. Her children were Floyd (17, drummer), Clair (15), Ray (13), and Muriel (11). Floyd earned $1200 the previous year but no other income was recorded. The family was Presbyterian.11 
(Mentioned) ObituaryShe was mentioned in John Archibald McLean's 1947 obituary as sister Mrs. W. Simpson of Winnipeg.12

Research Note Although the age is about 10 years too low in the above obituary, she is buried in the same plot as her son Clare so I think this record is for the correct person.14

Janet was 21 and born in Ontario. They had one child, Albert, who was 10 months old, born in June. Also in the household was Magnus' mother Elizabeth, his sister Isabella Inkster, and his niece Bella Tassey. The next household enumerated with that of his brother William.3 
1891 CensusJanet McKechnie and Magnus Inkster appeared on the 1891 Census of Bruce Township, Bruce County, Ontario, enumerated 22 Apr 1891. The Inkster family lived in a 1 story wood house with 3 rooms. Magnus was 45, born in Ontario, father born in Scotland, mother in Ireland, religion Presbyterian, and was a Farmer. Janet was 35, born in Ontario, parents born in Scotland, and her religion was Presbyterian. They could all read and write. Their children were Wishart (10) and Wm McKechnie (5). Also in the household was Magnus' widowed brother Albert and his son William C.4

Janet was 44, born 9 August 1856 in rural Ontario, and of Scotch origin. Their children were William (15), Agnes (9, attended school), and David (6.)2

The death certificate for Mrs Janet Inkster had the following information: age 49 years 6 months, residence Lot 4 Con 9, farmers wife, married to Magnus Inkster, born Saugeen Tp, died of apoplexy sudden, attended by Dr JG McLeod, Presbyterian. The informant was James Colwell, registered 28 Jan 1907.6

Note.Younger brother Dave Inkster recollected the story of Wishart's death: One time Uncle Albert went to Underwood to get some groceries and the mail and when he came back Wishart went out and was looking in the sleigh box while Albert was unhitching the horses. I don't know whether something scared the horses or what, but one of them swung around and jammed Wishart against the box and killed him.5
