NO SHIELDS TRADESMAN'S DEATH
MR E. TURNBULL, CAB PROPRIETOR

After a long illness resulting from an attack of influenza, Mr Edward Turnbull, the well-known funeral furnisher, cab proprietor, and furniture dealer, died at his residence, 112 Bedford Street, North Shields, at the age of 59. Mr Turnbull served his apprenticeship with Mr Johnson, who was a well-known cabinet maker carrying on business in Stephenson Street. After concluding his apprenticeship he began business on his own account in the same trade, over thirty years ago, and subsequently added that of an auctioneer. Taking up the business of an undertaker also, Mr Turnbull was the first in the town to make it possible for the poor people to have a funeral conducted with the dignity and ceremony befitting the occasion, the prices previously charged having been prohibitive to all but the well to do. For this service he earned the title of "The Poor Man's Undertaker." Always an energetic man of business, the deceased was continually engaged in extending his interests. Twenty years ago he commenced in a very modest way as a cab proprietor, a business which has grown very extensively, and which now includes motor vehicles, extensive stables having been erected in Albion Road. The deceased also built some years ago a large furniture depository in Upper Camden Street.
Mr Turnbull was an ardent Liberal in politics. He took no active part in public affairs, although he was repeatedly invited to stand as a candidate for the Town Council. He was interested in friendly society work, and was made an honorary member of the Foresters on the last occasion on which he was out of his house. He leaves a widow, three sons, who succeed him in his business, and four daughters.10

Biography
Ken McLean Family - by Florence McLean

Kenneth Angus McLean was born in Minot, North Dakota, of parents born in Ontario. The family came to Alberta settling in Calgary where Ken attended school. Later the family farmed in the Ensign district.

Ken served in the Army during the first World War but due to an injury was kept in Vancouver where he met and married Lillian Muir. They had two children -- Alberta (Mrs Hollister) of Magrath, Alberta and Kenneth Hector (Wally) who lost his life in a plane over the low countries during the Second World War. Ken bought grain in Retlaw, Aldersyde and Ensign where Lillian McLean died in 1925. During Ken's stay in Ensign he and Florence Richmond married. They had one son (now of Vulcan) -- Eugene. The Wheat Pool opened an elevator in Brant and Ken bought grain for them, remaining there for ten years. In 1937 he and Florence took over the Richmond land, adding the Corriveau section.

Ken was most interested in organizing baseball and was an enthusiastic curler. Due to ill-health, it was necessary for Ken to retire and he bought a home in Calgary where he stayed until he entered the hospital. He remained there until his death in July, 1971.6

Children of Martin McLean and Mary McGilvray

Life Events

MigrationScotland --> Ontario --> Illinois.

Research Note
I am not sure at all that Mary born c1862 is the daughter of Martin & Mary. The 1870 census does not record relationships, so even though she was enumerated with them, they might not be her parents. Martin & Mary McLean had a daughter Mary who was born c1840 and apparently came with them to the USA and married George Heffern.

BaptismMartin McLean was baptized on 13 Jan 1815 in Kilfinichen & Kilvickeon, Argyll. Their residence was Torraniochdrach [Torran Iochdarach].1
(with parents) ImmigrationHe immigrated with his parents from Mull in the county of Argyll, Scotland to Vaughan Township, York County, Canada circa 1820.

MarriageHe married Mary McGilvray on 1 Feb 1838 in Vaughan Township, York County, Ontario.
The marriage register recorded that they were a bachelor and spinster, both of Vaughan, married by banns. The witnesses were Charles McLean & Wm Mathewson.2
1851/2 CensusMartin and Mary McLean appeared on the 1852 Census of Vaughan Township, York County, Ontario, at Conc 6, Lot 14, enumerated Jan 1852. Martin was 37 (age next birthday), farmer, born Scotland, and a Free Presbyterian. Mary was born Scotland, Free Presbyterian, and age 36 next birthday. They live in a one story log house; 2 cows, 2 calves, 100# butter produced that year. Their children were Mary (12), Sarah (10), Archibald (6), and James (2.)3
Research Note In the 1852 census, Martin & Mary have a son James, age 2. In the 1861 census they have a son Hector, age 5, but no James. In the 1870 census they have a son James (with an undecipherable initial), age 14.
My working hypothesis is that James died young and a subsequent son was named Hector James (or James Hector.)
Residence On 22 Jan 1860 when his son Hector was baptised, Martin McLean lived in Esquesing, Halton County, Ontario.4
1861 CensusMartin and Mary McLean appeared on the 1861 Census of York County, Ontario. Martin was a laborer, born in Scotland, 45 years old. Mary was 45 and born in Scotland. They could not read or write. They family's religion was Church of Scotland and they lived in a one-story frame house.
The children in the household were all born in Upper Canada - Mary (21), Sarah (18), Archibald (16), John (9), and Hector (5). Hector was the only one who attended school within the year. [ages in this census are recorded as of the next birthday]5
Residence On 6 Dec 1861, Martin McLean lived in Albion Township, Peel County, Ontario, Martin McL---? & Sarah McLean of Albion were witnesses to a marriage on the same day as Sarah was married.
ImmigrationThe McLean family immigrated to the United States circa 1866.6
1865 CensusAn M McLean was listed as the head of household on the 1865 state census in Montgomery County, Illinois. The household had 3 males and 4 females (1 male in his 50s, 2 females in their 40s, 3 females and 1 male in their teens). [This may or may not be Martin & family but is worth noting]7
1870 CensusThey appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Ashkum, Iroquois County, Illinois, enumerated 27 Jun 1870 as Murry and Mary McClan. Martin was 55, a farmer, born in Scotland, with foreign born parents, and was a US citizen. He did not own land but had $400 in personal estate. Mary was 34, keeping house, and born in Scotland. Their children were John (18), James [sic] (14), and Mary (8), all born in Canada. [the ages are off but the family structure fits]8
Research Note Relationships were not noted in the 1870 census so there is a possibility that Mary age 8 is not their daughter. There is also the possibility that Martin's wife Mary was a second wife for him since her age was recorded as 34; however her age has returned to it's proper amount in the 1880 census.
1880 CensusMartin and Mary McClane appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Ashkum Township, Iroquois County, Illinois, enumerated 12 Jun 1880. Martin was 60, a farmer, born in Scotland, and could not read or write. Mary was 58, keeping house, born in Scotland and could read but not write. With them was their son John (27, farmer) and granddaughter Lizzie McHenry (18), both born in Canada.9

Life Events

Research Note How do I know that Mary, the daughter of Martin McLean & Mary McGilvray, is the same Mary who married George Heffern?
Mary married in 1867. According to census records, her parents and siblings moved to the United States about 1866. In the 1870 census, they were in Iroquois County. Mary, wife of George Heffern had a birthplace of Canada in census records.
As well, a descendant of Mary is a DNA match with me.
