James Harvey1

#2272, (1784 - 1847)

Children of James Harvey and Sarah Hay

Life Events

Research Note In the Stromness parish register the surname was spelled several ways, including Harvey and Hervie. "James Harvey" continued as the given names of descendants for many generations.
BirthJames Harvey was born in 1784.
Year estimated from 1841 census and death certificate.
MarriageHe married Sarah Hay on 27 Dec 1810 in Stromness, Orkney.
James was noted to be a sailor in Stromness.1
OccupationJames Harvey was a sailor in Cairston, as noted in the parish register entry for daughter Elizabeth's baptism on 7 Sep 1811.1
Research Note There is another James Harvey in Stromness. He was a carpenter, with a wife named Christian, married in 1809. This James had been to Hudson's Bay.
MigrationJames and Sarah and family moved from Scotland to England sometime between the birth of Sally in 1813 in Stromness and that of William between 1822 and 1826 in Northumberland County.

Research Note This appears to be the correct family in Tynemouth. Their daughter Elizabeth married in Tynemouth in 1839 with witness Sarah Harvey which could be her sister or her mother.
Research Note I am not at all sure that William is a son of James & Sarah. The only connection so far is that he is with them in the 1841 census. There is a fairly large gap between the births of Elizabeth and Sarah followed by William about 10 years later.
1841 CensusJames and Sarah Harvey appeared on the 1841 Census of Tynemouth, Northumberland, at Tyne Street. James was 50, a grocer, and born in Scotland. Sarah was 45 and born in Scotland. With them were [son?] William Harvey (15, born in the county of Northumberland) and [dtr] Sarah Moat (25, Scotland) & [granddaughter] Margery (9 months) Moat. Note that the 1841 census records ages rounded down to the nearest 5 years, does not record relationships, and only indicates whether or not the person was born in the county.2
DeathJames died on 3 May 1847. Details from the death certificate: James Harvey, male, age 63 years, died Third of May 1847 at 6 Middle Street North Shields, Mariner, certified cause of death Asthma 2 years. The informant was Ann Fitchett of 6 Front Street who was present at the death. She signed with her Mark.3
BurialHe was buried on 6 May 1847 in Tynemouth, Northumberland. The burial register noted that he was 63 years old and of Middle Street. Milbourn Place.4
Newspaper Published 14 May 1847 in the Newcastle Courant.

Deaths.

Sarah Hay1

Children of Sarah Hay and James Harvey

Life Events

BirthSarah Hay was born circa 1790 in Orkney.2

MarriageShe married James Harvey on 27 Dec 1810 in Stromness, Orkney.
James was noted to be a sailor in Stromness.1
MigrationJames and Sarah and family moved from Scotland to England sometime between the birth of Sally in 1813 in Stromness and that of William between 1822 and 1826 in Northumberland County.

Research Note This appears to be the correct family in Tynemouth. Their daughter Elizabeth married in Tynemouth in 1839 with witness Sarah Harvey which could be her sister or her mother.

Note that the 1841 census records ages rounded down to the nearest 5 years, does not record relationships, and only indicates whether or not the person was born in the county.3
(Widowed) DeathHer husband James died on 3 May 1847.4
1851 CensusSarah Harvey and her daughter Sarah Mowat, both widows, appeared on the 1851 Census of North Shields, Tynemouth, Northumberland, at 5 Middle Street. Sarah Harvey was 61, a shopkeeper, and was born in Orkney, Scotland. Sarah Mowat was 36, an assistant to her mother, and born in North Shields. The Mowat children were Margery (10, scholar) and John H (8, scholar). Three families lived at this address.2
DeathSarah died on 18 May 1856, Details from the death certificate: Sarah Harvey, died Eighteenth May 1856 at Middle Street North Shields, female, age 70 years, Widow of James Harvey master mariner Merchant Service, certified cause of death Bronchitis, registered 19 May 1856 by Margaret Pottinger of Middle Street who was present at the death.5
Research Note The informant on Sarah's death certificate, Margaret Pottinger, was a member of one of the three families living at 5 Middle Street in the 1851 census. She was age 34, a seaman's wife, and born in North Shields. There is no record of a Harvey / Pottinger marriage so I do not think she is a daughter of Sarah's.

FatherJames Harvey1 (1784 - 1847)
MotherSarah Hay1 (c 1790 - 1856)

Children of Sarah Harvey and Jacob Mowat

Children of Sarah Harvey and John Pearson

Life Events

BirthSarah Harvey was born on 6 Nov 1813 in Stromness, Orkney.1

BaptismShe was baptized on 11 Nov 1813 in Stromness.1
MarriageShe married Jacob Mowat on 10 Nov 1839 in Parish Church, Tynemouth, Northumberland.
Details from the certificate: Jacob Mowat, Bachelor & Sarah Hervey, Spinster, both of parish, by banns, married by William Mackenzie curate; witnesses William Harvey and Thomas Oxley [Oxley was a frequent witness].2
(with Parents) 1841 CensusSarah Moat and her infant daughter Margery appeared on the 1841 Census of Tynemouth, Northumberland in the household of her parents. Sarah was 25 and born in Scotland.3
(Widowed) DeathHer husband Jacob died between 1844 and 1848. He was recorded as "the late Jacob Mowat, mariner" in the newspaper notice of their daughter Elizabeth's death in June 1848.4,5,6
Research Note It is likely that the following records are for Jacob Mowat. His daughter Elizabeth was born in 1845 and when she died in 1848, the newspaper said that Jacob was deceased. So he must have died during that period. Also, his father-in-law's abode 7 months after this burial record was exactly the same.
