Research Note Although Christy, age 9, is with John & Flora McLean in the 1871 census, she is probably not their daughter. They have a daughter named Christina born circa 1868, shortly after this Christy. One possibility is that she is a daughter of John's widowed brother Hugh.

Obituary

The Death of Donald McKinnon

The Island of Mull, Argyleshire, Scotland was the birth place of Donald McKinnon. He was born in 1840 and with his family came to Canada when 8 years old. They lived in Vaughan, York Co., for four years but came to Bruce in 1852, now fifty years ago. The late Mr and Mrs Angus McKinnon, father and mother of the deceased, lived in Bruce many years highly respected by all who knew them, the latter only passing away a few years ago. The surviving members of the family are John McKinnon, Mrs John McLean, Mrs Peter Gilchrist, of Bruce ; Mrs Thomas Smith of Tara ; Mrs John Bell, of Saugeen ; and Mrs McGillivray, of Port Elgin. Mr James McKinnon, who died here eleven years ago, was also a brother.
The deceased was married 35 years ago to Flora McCallum, of Bentick, Grey county, who survives him with a family of eight children, namely, Angus in British Columbia, [portion of 4-5 words cut off] home, and Alex, clerk in McGillivray's store, Port Elgin, Mrs Arch Bell, of Saugeen, and Misses Lizzie, Bella and Kate at home. The funeral took place on Tuesday, Nov 4th, to North Bruce cemetery and was one of the largest ever seen in the County, there being about 200 carriages in the procession. The pastor Rev H McQuarrie, was assisted by Rev A J McGillivray, M.A., of London, nephew of Mr McKinnon, in conducting the services. Friends were present from distant points such as Kincardine, Durham, and Tara.
Mr McKinnon, though a comparatively young man, was one of the pioneers of Bruce. He loved to speak of the work and struggles, the social fellowship, and the friendly spirit among the settlers forty and fifty years ago. He was a splendid singer and before the North Bruce church was organized, acted as precentor in the church at Centre Bruce, and from its organization led the psalmody in North Bruce. It was perhaps a notable coincidence that on the day of Mr McKinnon's death the members of the congregation were voting on the question of introducing the aid of instrumental music into public worship. For several years the departed was a member of session and was very faithful to the spiritual interests of the people and loyal to the pastor in every worthy movement.
Not as a public man did Mr McKinnon show his strongest qualities. In the home he was a model husband, father and head of the family circle. He was kind and leal-hearted and the country far and wide will testify to his old-time, generous hospitality. Mr McKinnon was in the habit of seeing the good in people and things more than the bad. There was no suspicion in his nature. One who knew him well remarked to the Times the day of the funeral, "Donald McKinnon lived in the 13th chapter of first Corinthians".
The community is made poorer by the death of Mr McKinnon. But he leaves a blessed memory and an untarnished name which will be a treasure for his family and an inspiration and example to the community. As man, neighbor and citizen he will be missed but forgotten he will not be by the present generation of the people of Bruce.12

Ann Jewry

#1385, (c 1781 - 1858)

Children of Ann Jewry and James Foot

Life Events

BirthAnn Jewry was born circa 1781 in Somerset or Kent.1,2
Research Note Two different birthplaces were recorded in the census records.
Research Note In the Somerset baptisms index at Ancestry, there is an entry 4 January 1778 for the baptism of Ann daughter of Joshua and Joan Jewry in Monksilver. Many online trees (erroneously I believe) have this baptism for the Ann Jewry who married James Foot. Joshua and Joan had many daughters. Monksilver is about 50 miles from Maperton and Compton Pauncefoot. None of Ann's children were named Joshua or Joan. As well, this would make Ann close to 50 at the birth of her youngest child - extremely unlikely.

There is an entry 12 June 1784 in Nettlecombe for the baptism of Ann daughter of William and Joan. It's more likely agewise but is also 50ish miles away.

Have not yet found a likely baptism in Kent. One thing to keep in mind was that whoever gave the enumerator the information about Ann recorded in the 1851 census may have thought Ann was born in Kent but perhaps an earlier generation of the Jewry family was from Kent.

Two of my DNA matches yield leads. One has a Jury ancestor from the parish of Milverton Somerset. The other has a Jury ancestor from Rochester Kent.
MarriageShe married James Foot on 10 Jan 1803 in Maperton, Somerset.
The marriage was recorded on a loose piece of paper, as were several others. It reads:
"James Foot Sojourner of this Parish and Ann Jewry of this Parish were married in this Church by Banns this tenth of January in the year of our Lord one Thousand eight Hundred & three by Mr Gatehouse Curate"
James signed his name and Ann made her mark. The witnesses were William Foot and Susanna Foot, who each signed their name. [William and Susanna were his brother and sister-in-law]3
1841 CensusJames and Ann Foot appeared on the 1841 Census of Compton Pauncefoot, Somerset. They were both 60 years old and James was an agricultural labourer. With them were [their children] Thomas (15) and Jane (14), as well as [their son] Edward (25), [his wife] Louisa (20), [their deceased daughter Ann's daughter] Ellen (4) and [Louisa's son] William (1). Everyone was born in Somerset.
Note that in the 1841 census ages were rounded down and relationships were not recorded.1
1851 CensusAnn Foot appeared on the 1851 Census of Compton Pauncefoot, Somerset. She was enumerated next to her son Joseph's family. Ann was a widow, 70 years old, occupation Errand Woman, and was born in Kent. The parish name was heavily crossed out but looks like it begins with the letters Sa and has no descending letters.
With her was her niece Ellen Smart (age 14, scholar, born in Compton Pauncefoot.)2
Research Note Ellen Smart was actually Ann's granddaughter. Ellen's mother Ann, wife of William Smart, died shortly after Ellen's birth.
DeathAnn died in 1858 in Somerset.4

BurialAnn Foot was buried on 18 Nov 1858 in Compton Pauncefoot, Somerset. She was 77 years of age and her abode was Compton Pauncefoot.5
