Obituary

Mr Charlie McLellan, age 66 years, a resident of 102 - 777B Kingsway Ave, died at his residence on Tuesday, Aug 21, 1984. Born in Grand Coulee, Saskatchewan, he was the son of the late Mr and Mrs Sandy McLellan, and received his education in Regina. In 1941 he was married to the former Miss Jean Kennedy. He served in the Canadian Armed Forces during 1941 until 1945 with the Staff Clerks, Infantry and Artillery Corps in Regina, Petawawa and Shilo. In 1945 they moved to Red Rock where he began working for Domtar until 1978 when he retired as an instrument forman after 33 years of service. In 1982 they moved to Thunder Bay. A member of St Thomas Anglican Church, he was active in Red Rock United Church and with community sports there. Survived by his wife Jean, at home; two sons, Ken of Thunder Bay, Robin of Edmonton (en route); a daughter, Daryl, Mrs Philip Lein of Thunder Bay; three brothers and two sisters in Southern Ontario; three grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Pre-deceased by his parents and a brother Al. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 1:30 pm in the Jenkens Funeral Home. Rev Robert Russell of St Thomas Anglican Church will officiate and interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.5

MacGillivray, said he would come and minister at St. James if the congregation moved from their present site to a new area in the developing north end of London. This they did and erected a new church at the corner of Oxford and Wellington Streets in north London, and renamed it New St. James Church. [photo online]7

We are having special services every night this week up to the Communion, different ministers are speaking. Last night Mr. McGillivray from Newmarket, a brother of the one in London. I was too tired to go out but Mary said he was splendid, I hope to hear him to-night. *footnote reads: Angus H. MacGillivray (?-1919), Knox College class of 1899, was a pastor in Newmarket, Chatham, and in Hamilton, and was a chaplain during the war (BDKC 156).8

Guelph Jan 3.- Rev, A.J.MacGillivary, 70, former Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Canada and one of the most widely known clergyman in the Dominion, died, in the Guelph General Hospital Saturday. His death followed a short illness.
For twenty-five years minister of Knox Presbyterian Church in Guelph. Dr McGillivray was recognized as one of the leadders of the church he has served for more than four decades and his work on various church boards and committees gained for him a wide connection throughtout Canada.
Born near Port Elgin, Dr. MacGillivary was educated at Ridgetown High School and the University of Manitoba. He received his Master of Arts Degree at Princeton University and graduated from the Princeton Theological Seminary.
First Charge in Oklahoma
Starting his ministry in 1894 he went to Oklahoma and served in the territory just after it had been opened to the first settlers, In 1898 Dr MacGillivray took charge of St. James's Presbyterian Church in London Ont., which was built in his time. Seven years later he moved to Vancouver where he was minister of St. John's Presbyterian Church, which was also built during his pastorate.
Dr. MacGillivray received his Doctor pf Divinity Degree from Westminster College, Vancouver. in 1910 as an acknowledgement of his part in the founding of the institution.
In 1926 he was honored with the highest office in the gift of the church when he became moderator of the General Assembly.
Active in Organizations
He was a member of Waverly Lodge, A.F. and A.M., and was active in many organizations in the city.
Surviving are his widow, the former Minnie Gertrude Sherigan, Palermo, Ont., one son James, of the Department of English of the University of Toronto: one daughter, Mrs. H.G Baker, Belmont, Ont: one brother Rev J.K MacGillivray, Ashfield Ont; and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Stuart and Miss Isabel MacGillivray both of Detroit.
Funeral will take place on Tuesday at 3 p.m., with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery, Guelph. Pg 13.15

We are having special services every night this week up to the Communion, different ministers are speaking. Last night Mr. McGillivray from Newmarket, a brother of the one in London. I was too tired to go out but Mary said he was splendid, I hope to hear him to-night. *footnote reads: Angus H. MacGillivray (?-1919), Knox College class of 1899, was a pastor in Newmarket, Chatham, and in Hamilton, and was a chaplain during the war (BDKC 156).7

The attestation papers included the following information: born May 27th 1871 at Port Elgin Ontario, address 27 Ontario Ave Hamilton, next-of-kin wife Mrs A H MacGillivray, profession Clergyman, religion Presbyterian, former military service Chaplain York Rangers 5 years, willing to serve in the 173rd Battn Canadian Highlanders CEF with rank of Hon. Captain.11 
DeathAngus died on 14 Nov 1919 in 27 Ontario Ave, Hamilton, Wentworth County, Ontario.

It was noted that the family had one birth in 1860 and that one adult could not read or write.3

Archibald was 46, born in Scotland, Church of Scotland, and a farmer who was unable to read or write. Ann was 40 and born in Scotland. Their children were John (14), Mary Ann (12), Jennet (10), Catharine (8), Isabella (6), Alexander (4), and Angus (11 months). The five eldest attended school.4

1921 CensusAgnes Oliver appeared on the 1921 Census of Lacknerville, Didsbury, Alberta. She was a lodger with ??? Moore (female, age 82). Agnes was 58, married, born in Ontario, parents born in Ontario, Mennonite, no occupation recorded. Richard Franklin not yet found.6 
DeathHe died circa 1940 in Calgary, Alberta.4
 
Note.
Frank took up a homestead in the Rugby District SE 12-31-4-W5 which is now owned by Mr. Douglas Hosegood. Frank married Miss Agnes Moore. Her parents lived where Mrs. Carl (Avril) Russell lives now.
After selling his homestead, Frank lived in Bellingham, Washington for a few years. Later he spent some time in Edmonton, then moved to Calgary where he was associated with the Salvation Army.
He passed away in Calgary about the year 1940.4

1911 CensusKyle F and Minnie Oliver appeared on the 1911 Census of Alberta, at Township 31 Range 3 W5. Kyle F was 31, born Aug 1879 in Ontario, of English origin, Methodist, and a farmer working on his own account. Minnie was 22, born June 1888 in Ontario, of Scotch origin, and Baptist. They had two children, Leslie K (2) and Minnie M (1.)5 
1916 CensusFletcher K and Minie appeared on the 1916 Census of Alberta, at Township 31 Range 3 W5, enumerated 1 Jun 1916. Fletcher was 35, born in Ontario, Anglican, and a farmer working on his own account. Minnie was 29 and born in Ontario. Their children were Leslie (8), May (6), and Laurence (1). Also in the household was one farm servant.8

Kyle homesteaded NW 6-31-3-W5, which is now owned by Mr. Alex Blain. In 1904 he married Minnie Anderson and they settled on the homestead at Rugby. Their three children; Leslie, Mae, and Lawrence were born in a log house there. Mrs. Charlie Brown, a neighbor who was a mid-wife, assisted at their births.
Minnie and Kyle Oliver were both fond of hunting and sports of all kinds. Fish were caught as far away as Pine Lake, also at the still popular big fishing hole in the Fallen Timber River. Minnie and Kyle went hunting coyotes on horseback and with coyote hounds. The hides were sold and also the hides of muskrat, beaver, mink, lynx and weasles. Mr. and Mrs. Simpson of the Calgary Hides and Fur store of Simpson and Lee often went hunting deer, moose and antelope with them.
Mrs. Oliver was a Charter Member of Rugby W.I., being present at the first meeting in 1913. Mr. Oliver owned one of the first cars in the Rugby District.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Oliver were fond of taking pictures. Mrs. Oliver used a dark part of their basement for developing and printing. They attended dances at houses and schools where Mr. Oliver played the violin to help out with the music.
Mr. Kyle Oliver passed away in 1921 of pneumonia.9
 
Note.A memoir by Bill Brown mentions that for two winters during the war he, Kyle Oliver, Lou Bossart, and Arthur Shantz played for dances. The profits went to the Red Cross.
In 1920, Bill worked for Kyle Oliver. Kyle died that winter of pneumonia and, at his request, Bill worked for Mrs Oliver on the farm. After a year, Bill left but eventually returned to work the Oliver farm and married Minnie in 1925.10

Their children were Thomas (28), James (25), John (22), and Winsor (12). The eldest three were agricultural laborers. All were born in Devon. Note that the 1841 census records ages rounded down to the nearest 5 years, does not record relationships, and only indicates whether or not the person was born in the county.4 
1851 CensusEsther Cox appeared on the 1851 Census of Salcombe Regis, Devon. She was 64, a widow, and born in Sidbury. Her son John, a farmer of 60 acres was the head of the household. With them was one agricultural servant.5

The children were Emma (10), Edwin (9), Edward (6), and Alfred (1). With them was [Mary's mother] Mary Humphries (60, Independent). The entire family was born in Somerset.3 
1851 CensusMary Ann Penny appeared on the 1851 Census of Pitminster, Somerset, at Howley. She was a Housekeeper in the household of John Lemon, a butcher (master employing one man), and his wife Sally. Mary Ann was 42, married, and born in Trull. With her were her sons Edwin (18, house servant) and John (3 months.)2 
1861 CensusJames and Mary Ann appeared on the 1861 Census of Pitminster, Somerset, at Sellick's Green, Blagdon Hamlet. James was 60 years old, a Butcher, and born in Trull. Mary Ann was 50, born in Trull. Their children were Alfred (20, butcher) and John (11, scholar.)4 
1871 CensusMary A Penny appeared on the 1871 Census of Bridgwater, Somerset, at St John's Vicarage. She was a Nurse in the household of the Vicar of St John the Baptist where there was one month old baby. She was 57 years old, married, and born in Trull.5 
1881 CensusMary Ann Penny appeared on the 1881 Census of Taunton St Mary, Somerset, at Burton Place in the household of her daughter and son-in-law Louisa and William Coates. She was recorded as a widow [sic], age 73, Annuitant, and born in Trull. Her husband James was in Blagdon Hill, Pitminster.6 
1881 CensusMary Ann was recorded a second time on the 1881 Census. She was in Bristol, Gloucestershire, at Old Manor House. She was recorded as a visitor, unmarried [sic], age 72, an Annuitant, and born in Trull. She was visiting the Churchill family: Richard, licensed victualler, his wife Mary, and his mother Elizabeth Churchill (widow, age 74, annuitant, birthplace Trull). [Elizabeth was her husband's sister]. Others at the Old Manor House were recorded as heads or lodgers.7 
DeathMary died in 1885.8
 
BurialShe was buried on 3 Nov 1885 in Taunton St Mary, Somerset. She was 77 years old and her abode was Shuttern.9
