SMART Bert, of Saskatoon, formerly of Watson, died on August 25th at the age of 92. He was predeceased by his wife Mildred and sister Mabel. Bert is survived by his sister Ellen and his brother Ted. He will be missed and lovingly remembered by his son Bill and daughter Sally. A special thank you to Jean and Daryl Gourley; Twyla and Les Widdifield; Gerry and Homer Gourley and Joan Laewetz for their assistance and support. Bert was a resident of Veterans Village, Sherbrooke Community Centre for the past year and a half. Thank you to the people who cared for him with affection, humor and compassion. A private graveside interment was held at Watson Cemetery on Saturday, August 28th. Arrangements entrusted to Sue Panattoni Mourning Glory Funeral Services.9

She lived to the age of 84 and many of her descendants have been given the name Ellen.

Ellen was 50 and born in Lambeth. Their children were Noah (20, potter), James (15, printers assistant), Mary (13, general servant), Clara (11, scholar), Mark (9, scholar). Also with them were a friend, Elizabeth McDermot (widow, 70, born Ireland), and a visitor Henry McDermot (unmarried, 26, mat maker, born Lambeth). There were two additional families lodging at this address.7

Also at this address (but relationships were not recorded) were their daughter Jane Pace and her family, daughter Mary Sykes and her family, and William and Sarah Webb with their son William (4.)8

1901 CensusEllen appeared on the 1901 Census of Lambeth, London, at 5 Granby Buildings, enumerated 31 Mar 1901. She was a widow, age 80, and born in Westminster. Living with her were her widowed daughter Mary Sykes and her family.4

Note.Emily was a bit of a black sheep. She played the piano and ran off with a travelling entertainer, leaving her family in Clapham. This included her young baby daughter Ellen (born c1893 and known as Nell) for her husband and their daughter Emily to bring up.10 
(Witness) Marriage Noah Wright witnessed the marriage of Charles Hugo von Porembsky to his niece Ellen Eliza Pace on 18 May 1896 in All Saints South Lambeth, Surrey.11 
1901 CensusNoah Wright appeared on the 1901 Census of Clapham, London, at No 200 Stewarts Road. Noah was 50, a Terra Cotta Worker and was born in Lambeth, London. He was recorded as married but his wife was not present. In the household were daughters Ellen (8) and Emily Simmonds (22). Emily's husband Reuben and son Heber Noah were also there.12

Research Note There is an entry in the GRO marriage index for a Mary Sykes and William Edward Hildebrandt in Lambeth RD in the September quarter of 1905. In the 1911 census, they are living in Lambeth. William was a house painter, age 64. Mary was 53, born in Lambeth, and they had been married 6 years. No one else was in the household. There is a good chance that this is the same Mary Sykes.

Frederick was 35, employed as a Stationers Warehouseman, and was born in Hargrave, Suffolk. His wife Clara was 37 and born in Lambeth. Their children were Frederick (11, paralyzed), Alfred (9), Charles E (4), and John (6 months). They were living in two rooms in the same house as Clara's mother and sister Mary's family.6 
1901 CensusFrederick W and Clara Sheene appeared on the 1901 Census of Lambeth, London, at 26 Lower Kennington Lane, enumerated 31 Mar 1901. Frederick was 45, worked as a Pottery yard foreman, and was born in Hargraves, Suffolk. Clara was 41 and born in Lambeth. Their children at home were Alfred (19, apprentice compositor), Charles E (14, telegraph messenger), and John (10.)7 
1911 CensusFrederick William and Clara appeared on the 1911 Census of Highams Park, Essex, at 61 Beresford Road, Chingford Road. Frederick was 55, worked as a stationers warehouseman, and was born in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. Clara was 51 and born in Lambeth. They had been married 33 years and it was noted that Clara had borne 5 children, 3 of whom were still living. They were in a 6 room house with three children: Alfred (29, typewriter ribbon maker), Charles Edward (24, civil servant mail sorter), and John (20, railway parcels porter.)8 
DeathClara died in 1930 in Sussex.9

Research Note The name of William's wife 'Caroline' was likely an enumerator error. The age and birthplace are correct for Catherine.
In the 1851 census, grandson William was the son of their son William and grandson Edwin was the son of their daughter Mary Ann. 
Death He was not in Cheriton Fitzpaine in the 1861 census; there is an entry in the death register index for a William Channing in 1856 in Tiverton RD.

1881 CensusJohn and Annie Channing appeared on the 1881 Census of Tiverton, Devon, at Saint Andrew St (Flour Mill). John was 74, a Miller Foreman, born Cheriton Fitzpaine. Annie was 70, born Tiverton. No one else was in the household.10

(with Mother) 1841 CensusJames appeared on the 1841 Census of Lambeth, Surrey in the household of his widowed mother Jane. He was 15, a Barge Builder, and born in the county.1 
1861 CensusA James Wright appeared on the 1861 Census as a labourer on the Barge Frederick, which was in Kent. On board were a captain and three labourers. James was 38, single, and born in Lambeth. [this may or may not be the correct James]4

BaptismMatthew Wright was baptized on 7 Sep 1828 in St Mary Lambeth, Surrey. He had a twin brother named Mark. They were the sons of William, a butcher, and Jane Wright, of Princes Street.4 
(with Mother) 1841 CensusMathew appeared on the 1841 Census of Lambeth, Surrey in the household of his widowed mother Jane. He was 11 and born in the county.5 
1851 CensusMatthew Wright appeared on the 1851 Census of St Mary Lambeth, Surrey, at 67 Broad Street. Mattw was 22, a Porter, single, and born in Lambeth. He was lodging with the Wm Burley family who lived at the same address as his brothers Noah and Charles. His sister Ellen's mother-in-law Catherine Buckley was also there.6 
MarriageHe married Maria Matthews on 16 Jan 1853 in St Mary Newington, Surrey.

They were married after banns in the parish church. Matthew and Maria both signed with an X and the witnesses were Noah Wright and Mary [X] Wright.7 
1861 CensusMatthew and Maria Wright appeared on the 1861 Census of Lambeth, Surrey, at 2 Hamilton Street, enumerated 7 Apr 1861. Matthew was 31, a coalheaver, and was born in Lambeth. Maria was 29 and born in Lambeth. They lived with Matthew's widowed mother Jane. Their children were Maria (8), Matthew (6), Clara (5), and Jane (1.)3 
1871 CensusMatthew and Maria Wright appeared on the 1871 Census of Lambeth, Surrey, at No 7 Portland Street. Matthew was 43, a Carman, and born in Lambeth. Maria was 40, a Laundress and born in Lambeth. Their children were Jane (11), Clara (9) [sic-she was 15], and Matthew (7) [sic-he was 16]. They also had one lodger living with them.8 
Note.Daughters Jane, Mary Anne, and Georgina were all baptised in 1876. 
(Witness) Marriage Matthew Wright witnessed the marriage of Alfred Carter and his daughter Clara Wright on 25 Dec 1877 in South Kennington, Surrey. Matthew signed with an X.9 
Research Note There is an entry in the death index for a Mathew Wright age 52 in Lambeth in 1880.10 
1881 CensusHis widow Maria appeared on the 1881 Census of Lambeth, London, at 23 Heman Street. There were two small families at this address. Maria was a widow, age 50, a Laundress, and born in London. Her daughters were Georgiana (17, general servant) and Mary A (14, general servant.)11

MarriageShe married Noah Wright on 6 Nov 1842 in St Mary Newington, Surrey.
Information from the parish register: Noah Wright, full age, bachelor, labourer, residence Broad Street, father William Wright, deceased.
Mary Buckley, minor, spinster, residence Broad Street, father William Buckley, stone mason.
They were married after banns in the parish church. Mary signed with an X, as did the witnesses William Buckley and Ann Fleming.1 
Note.Mary's sister Ellen married Noah's brother Charles. 
1851 CensusNoah and Mary Wright appeared on the 1851 Census of St Mary Lambeth, Surrey, at 67 Broad Street, enumerated 30 Mar 1851. Noah was 30, a Coal Labourer, and was born in Lambeth. Mary was 28 and born in Westminster, Middlesex. At the same address are Buckleys, Burleys, and Noah's brothers Charles and Mathew.4 
DeathMary died between 1851 and 1861.5
