Father(-?-) O'Donnell

Children of Elizabeth O'Donnell and William Inkster

Life Events

Overview
* * * * *

Elizabeth was born in County Fermanagh, Ireland about 1810. She and two sisters came to Canada, all settling in the Marmora area of Ontario. Elizabeth, or Bessie, married a Scottish immigrant, William Inkster. Between 1834 and 1852, they had nine children. In the 1850s, the Inksters moved a short distance to Madoc Township where they lived in a one story log house. They moved again in the early 1870s, this time to Bruce County over 200 miles to the west. William died there in 1878 and Elizabeth lived another four years.

Research Note There is an old family story that Elizabeth and 2 sisters were sent to Canada. They traveled from Ireland to Liverpool to Bytown. Their father was a Fermanagh land baron. One sister married a Mr. Richardson, a gold mine owner. According to the story, Eliz was in Bytown working as a house servant, then moved on to Belleville.3
BirthElizabeth O'Donnell was born circa 1810 in County Fermanagh, Ireland.
Elizabeth's birth year is uncertain as her reported age varied throughout her life. Circa 1810 is consistent with most of the census records and would put her age at the birth of their youngest child at 43 which was typical for the time. Her death certificate reported that she was 82 but that was apparently exaggerated, a common practice.
MarriageShe married William Inkster, son of John Inkster and Abigail Marion, on 20 Nov 1833 in Belleville, Ontario, The certificate reads:
Married by license Wm Inkster Bachelor Yeoman of the Township of Marmora to Elizabeth O'Donnel Spinster of the same place on Wednesday the 20th of November 1833 by me James Ketchan Minister of the Scotch Church in Belleville. In presence of John Kays and Joanna Jennery.4,5

marriage certificate
Belleville, Ontario, 1833
Research Note The Scotch Church was St Andrew's Presbyterian which was built in 1831. It was a white frame building with plank seating for 300 and lit by tallow candles. By direct road nowadays, it is 47 km from Marmora to Belleville.
Item. A letter was written by Royal & Mary Keyes from Marmora, Ontario back to their family in Fermanagh, Ireland. The mention of "Bessey odonel" and her husband "William Ingster" shows that the environs of Irvinestown is likely the place of origin for Elizabeth O'Donnell as well. Here are some excerpts from the letter:

BirthMargaret O'Donnell was born circa 1812 in Ireland.2,3

MarriageShe married John Richardson in Ontario.

Research Note The account, "200 Years of Richardsons" says that John had four children by his first wife, Elizabeth Carter: Elizabeth (1832), George (1835), Mary Jane (1836), and William (1841.)
1851/2 CensusJohn and Margaret Richardson appeared on the 1852 Census of Tudor & Elzevir Townships, Hastings County, Canada West (Ontario), enumerated 12 Jan 1852. They lived in a shanty; other families on the page were in log houses . Relationships were not recorded in the census and ages are as of the next birthday. John was 40, a Yeoman, born in Ireland, religion E[piscopal?]. Margaret was 40, born in Ireland, religion P[resbyterian]. The children were Wm (11), John (9), James (6), Thos (5), and Joseph (3), all born in Canada. The family enumerated next to them was that of George and Sarah Fox, also from Ireland. The Fox's 21 year old was born in Ireland and their 18 year old born in Canada.3
1861 CensusJohn and Margaret appeared on the 1861 Census of Madoc Township, Hastings County, Canada West (Ontario). The image of the page is very weak. They are again next to the Fox family. John was a Farmer, born in Ireland, age 58. Margaret was born in Ireland, age 57. The children were William (20), John (18), James (15), Thos (14), Joseph (12). The family's religion was Church of England. The youngest four attended school. A tally mark recorded that Margaret could not read or write. They lived in a one story log house.4

Note.In 1866, court clerk and part-time prospector Marcus Powell discovered a gold-laden cave on the farm of John Richardson. Richardson had hired him to explore his land. A gold rush followed and the 80-building shantytown of Eldorado sprang up. An estimated 3,000 people came to the area, new hotels were built, and merchants raised their prices. Twenty-five mounted police were stationed at the Richardson shaft to maintain order. There were numerous disputes over the ownership of the mine and financing was a problem. It turned out that the deposits were not as hoped and the company became bankrupt. Among the few who made a profit were John Richardson who reportedly sold his rights for $10,000 and Power who sold his for $15,000.6
Note. The family legend is that each of the 5 children of John and Margaret received $5000 from the sale of the mine as well as a gold ring.7
DeathMargaret died on 3 Jul 1868.8

BurialShe was buried in Lakeview Cemetery, Madoc Township, Hastings County, Ontario.8
