Tax List Alex Lyall appeared on the Portsmouth Rate Books in 1785. He was the occupier of a dwelling on High Street. He was also recorded there in 1786, surname spelled Lyell.
Poor rate books were records of the amount of rates paid and by whom. Rates were levied annually and collected from both property owners and occupiers. The money was used for local poor relief. The Poor Law Act of 1598 made the parish responsible for the poor.3

(Witness) ProbateSusanna Patterson was an executor of the estate of Alexander Lyall on 5 May 1790 in Prerogative Court of Canterbury, London.5

Each Dwelling House has a convenient Kitchen, Laundry, and other offices, erected at the sides of them; the Gardens are extensive, and communicative with St Thomas's-street, having Stables, Wash-house, Harness-rooms, &c &c together with a Brew-house, Bake-house, Laundry, and other buildings, fronting that Street.
The Drawing Room of the Dwelling House occupied by Mrs Lyall, measures about 28 feet 6 inches, by 19 feet, and is 11 feet in height, and several other of the Rooms of each Dwelling House measure from 19 feet by 18 feet, to 17 by 16, and are from 11 to 12 feet in height; the Bed Chambers consist of three and four on a Floor in each House; the Cellars are warm, dry, and commodious, and extend completely under the Dwelling Houses.
The whole Area of the Premises, contains in front and rear 98 feet, and 177 feet 6 inches in depth, and are altogether, from their superior appearance, a most desirable situation.
Possession may be had at Midsummer Day next.

Burial.Susanna was buried on 14 Jun 1818 in Portsmouth, Hampshire. The parish register noted that she was 81 years old and of High Street.8

Denmark-Kee

A very pretty wedding took place on Wednesday morning at home of the bride's parents, Mr and Mrs Freeborn Kee, 3rd Street N., when their only daughter, Mary Luella, was married to Mr William Denmark.
The bride looked exceedingly pretty wearing a suit of navy and green striped satin and panama hat, carrying a shower bouquet of white roses. The bride was given away by her father. The bridesmaid, Miss Eva Cox, wore a charming flowered marquisite and carried a bouquet of pink roses, while Mr John Fulton acted as best man to the groom. The groom presented the bride with a gold wrist watch and the bridesmaid with a Japanese handbag and the best man with a silver cigarette case. Rev W M Ryan performed the ceremony. Many beautiful gifts testified to the esteem in which the bride is held.
After a daintily served wedding breakfast at the bride's home the happy couple left for the coast. On their return they will reside in Red Deer.4

Elizabeth was 61 and born in Weston Zoyland. They had two grandchildren with them: George Phillips (18, carpenter) [son of their daughter Hanah] and Annie Osment (10, scholar) [a daughter of their daughter Mary]. As well, they had three boarders in the household.7

She was the head of the household, a widow, age 81, Pensioner (infirm) and born in Stoke St Gregory Dorset. With her was her granddaughter Ann Osborne [sic] (20, domestic servant, birthplace Shepton Montague) and her granddaughter Elizabeth Foote (16, domestic servant, birthplace Stoney Stoke, Somerset). Elizabeth's son George and his family also lived in Pylle.8

At home was Sydney James (17, merchants clerk). Daughter Daisy's name was entered then crossed off so she was likely living elsewhere.8

Elizabeth was 36 and born in Harlow Essex. Their children were Robert W (13), Elliner E (5), Jane L (3) and Frederick C (7 months.)7 
1881 CensusThomas and Elizth appeared on the 1881 Census of Mile End Old Town, Middlesex, at 3 Alma Road. Thomas was 47, a Stationers Warehouseman, and was born in Somers Town St Pancras. On her baptism record Emma's middle name is spelled Martyn but elsewhere it is Martin - very likely a family name. She was born in 1839 in Exeter, Devon and had one sister who was 9 years her senior. Her father was a bricklayer. Emma lived her adult life in the county of Surrey. At the age of 17 (although the certificate said she was of full age), she married Thomas Joseph Cox and they had their first child seven months later. They had nine known children. The eldest two boys emigrated to Australia and the eldest daughter to Canada.
