Note.
Richard Oliver - By Ed Oliver

My grandfather, Richard Oliver, and family came from Roland, Manitoba in 1898 travelling by boxcar with their belongings. There were five children, Kyle, Frank, Fraser, Parker and Emma. He homesteaded on SW 6-32-2-5 which is west of the Sprinside School.
In 1912, I, Ed Oliver, came from Saskatchewan to live with my grandparents. Granddad always kept a nice bunch of horses. One little grey mare I was breaking would buck but my grandfather wouldn't believe me when I told him. One day when he thought no one was looking he tried to ride her and got piled.
They used to go to church when it was held at the Carver farmhouse and at Westerdale.
After Grandma passed away there were several housekeepers, one who chased Grandad around the house outside with a frying pan.
He sold the stock and moved to Didsbury for awhile. After a seige of town living he went back to the farm. He again moved into Didsbury after being on the farm another few years. He moved into a small house east of the railway tracks. In 1925 he moved to Calgary and in 1932 he passed away at the age of 90 years.
Mr. Oliver's daughter, Emma, married William Galloway and passed away in 1909 at 24 years of age.12

NoteThomas Oliver wrote a Petition for a place in the Excise office. However, he remained a schoolmaster so either he didn't submit the petition or it was denied.

To the right Hon. Earl L___, first Lord commissioner of the Treasury.

The humble petition of T. O. Sheweth, That your petitioner, being anxious to procure an appointment under government is induced to prefer the Excise service, from an opinion, that, from his education, habits, & manners, he is better calculated to discharge the duties of that department, than any other. Your petitioner, therefore, humbly ventures to solicit for an appointment as Excise officer in the above mentioned service; & he is the more induced to hope for success in his humble petition thus presented to the notice of your lordship, from the circumstance that his character will bane the test of any inquiry; &, if necessary, your petitioner can produce a variety of the most respectable testimonials as to the general propriety of my conduct. & you petitr as in duty bound will ever pray &c

Note The above must be backed by one of the commissioners, or it will never be effectual.3

MRS ROBERT LINTON
DECEASED
On Monday evening, January 23rd, Mary Oliver, widow of the late Robert Linton, entered into rest very suddenly and unexpectedly. Mrs Linton had a weak spell in the morning but during the day she felt better and no one apprehended that the end was so near. About 10.45 at night while lying in bed very suddenly and peacefully the end came.
The late Mrs Linton was born in Devonshire, England, being a daughter of the late Thomas Oliver. She came to Canada with her parents when a girl about 15 years of age, in a sailing vessel, the voyage taking nine weeks. The family first settled at Meyersburg but soon came to Campbellford where the deceased spent the rest of her life. On Nov 7th, 1868, she was married to her late husband, the ceremony being performed by the late Rev Septimus Jones, of Belleville. To them were born seven children, five of whom survive, three sons and two daughters viz.: Adam, F.A. (Fred) and John, of Campbellford; Mrs Noel Gill, of Charlestown, W Virginia, and Mrs Stanley Neale, of town. Two other sons, George and Frank, died some years ago and Mr Linton in October, 1923.
The late Mrs Linton was possessed of many of those excellencies of character that developed in those early days among the pioneer settlers of this country. It may be truly said that she lived for others. Her home life was marked by love, patience and cheerfulness, and beyond the pale of her family many kindly acts of helpfulness and cheer are gratefully remembered by friends and neighbours. never ostentatious or conspicuous but always quiet and reserved, her life was intensive in kindliness and compassion, expressing itself in unselfish service for others. In religion she was an Anglican and was deeply interested in all the activities of the church. Even in her declining years she never lost interest in the affairs of life.
The funeral takes place this Thursday afternoon. Service will be held in Christ Church at 3 o'clock p.m., and the remains will be interred in the family plot in Christ Church cemetery.17

BurialShe was buried on 26 Jan 1928 in Christ Church Anglican, Campbellford, Northumberland County, Ontario.18,19

Richard Oliver1

#2387, (1802 - 1888)
FatherRichard Oliver1 (1766 - 1831)
MotherSarah Mogridge1 (1770 - 1851)

Life Events

BaptismRichard Oliver was baptized on 27 Sep 1802 in Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon.1
(Heir) WillHe was named an heir in the will of his father Richard Oliver dated 2 Oct 1831. Son Richard and daughter Sarah as tenants in common were bequeathed his dwelling house now in the occupation of Elizabeth Prior together with the part of the garden thereto now in the occupation of William Cruwys on the west side of the gutter, all part of Pynes.2
MarriageRichard Oliver married Mary Jones on 12 Feb 1833 in Stoke Canon, Devon.
The parish register noted that Richard was a bachelor and Mary a widow. They were both of Stoke Canon parish and were married by banns. The witnesses were William Pasmore and Ann Pasmore [Richard's sister and brother-in-law].3
1841 CensusIt's difficult to pinpoint Richard's whereabouts in the 1841 census, since it doesn't report exact ages, birthplaces or relationships. A strong possibility is in Stoke Canon - age 35, Inn keeper. Also in the household is Mary Oliver (age 55, not born in Devon). Relationships and marital status were not recorded in the 1841 census.4
(Heir) WillRichard Oliver was named an heir in the will of his mother Sarah Oliver dated 17 Jan 1844. He was noted to be of the parish of Axmouth, Devon and was bequeathed £70. Richard was the eldest living son but his next brother, John, lived with their mother and inherited the property of Codcloses. The first son in the family, William, died in 1841 or he would have likely been the primary heir.5
(Witness) BaptismRichard Oliver was named a godfather at the baptism of his brother Thomas' daughter Sarah on 26 Jan 1851 in Ashcombe, Devon. He was recorded as Uncle Richard.6

Life Events

Research Note Maria had her last known child (my 2nd great grandmother Frances) c1826 which would put her birth year in the early to mid 1780s.
Research Note An avenue that needs investigation: Maria's first husband was named John STEVENSON. Her daughter Letitia married a Robert STEPHENSON. Perhaps they are related

A second avenue that needs investigation: at his death, John Stevenson reportedly had 8 children; I don't know how many of these were with Maria. Only three of his children are known so far.

MarriageMaria Montgomery married John Stevenson on 9 Apr 1801.
As recorded in Sir William Betham's abstract:
"Stevenson John of St Andrew St Dublin Pawnbroker & Maria MtGomery of the parish of St Anne Dublin Spr 9 April 1801."2
Research Note There was a marriage license issued in 1801 in Dublin Diocese for John Stevenson & Maria Montgomery. The actual license was destroyed in the 1922 explosion at the Public Record Office of Ireland during the Irish civil war.3
Research Note The Irish Genealogical Research Society online Marriage Index has an entry for Mr John Stevenson & Miss Montgomery both in Dublin. Source: Father Clare's Newspaper Index. The Hibernian Chronicle, April 1801 [Note: as of July 2023, not available at Find My Past newspaper collection].
