DEATH OF MRS HARDWICK.--Our obituary contains a notice of the death of Mrs Hardwick, the beloved wife of Police Superintendent Hardwick, on Friday evening, after only a day or two's illness, at the comparatively early age of 34 years. She leaves her husband and seven children to mourn her loss. Supt. Hardwick has been stationed here about two years, during which time he has gained the respect of all he has come in contact with. Very many are his sympathisers at this his time of trial.6

Newspaper Published 22 Feb 1882 in the Taunton Courier.

SUDDEN DEATH OF SUPERINTENDENT HARDWICK.--A gloom was cast over this town on Thursday week by a report that Superintendent Hardwick, of the Somerton Constabulary, had been found dead in his bed, which proved but too true. The day previous deceased was in his usual health, and was out with his horse and trap. It appears, from the statement of his eldest son, who slept with him, that he heard his father breathing heavily. He at once called the housekeeper, and went for the doctor, who was soon in attendance, but his services were of no avail, as he had breathed his last. Deceased was 44 years of age, and had been stationed at Somerton about six years, during which time he lost his wife (about three years ago). He leaves a family of seven children to mourn his loss. The funeral took place on Monday, the Rev W H Strong officiating, and was attended by, among others, in addition to the relatives, the following, as a last mark of respect, viz.:--FW Pinney, Esq, JP, Captain Butt, JP, Dr Valentine, Messrs Head, Hewitt, Davis, Pearce, Watts (2), and Superintendent Giles, and the constables of the division, who bore him to the grave. Deceased was highly respected and beloved by all his men, and much esteemed by the magistrates of the division. He was also greatly liked by the inhabitants.8

ProbateJohn Hardwick's estate was proved on 6 Apr 1882. Entry from the probate calendar:

HARDWICK John. Personal Estate £180 6s. The Will of John Hardwick late of Somerton in the County of Somerset Superintendent of Police who died 9 February 1882 at Somerton was proved at Taunton by Thomas Hardwick of Bedminster in the said County Registrar of Births and Deaths the Brother the Executor according to the Tenor.9

Mary McGilvray1

#455, (c 1816 - )

Children of Mary McGilvray and Martin McLean

Life Events

Research Note
I am not sure at all that Mary born c1862 is the daughter of Martin & Mary. The 1870 census does not record relationships, so even though she was enumerated with them, they might not be her parents. Martin & Mary McLean had a daughter Mary who was born c1840 and apparently came with them to the USA and married George Heffern.

BirthMary McGilvray was born circa 1816 in Scotland.2

MarriageShe married Martin McLean on 1 Feb 1838 in Vaughan Township, York County, Ontario.
The marriage register recorded that they were a bachelor and spinster, both of Vaughan, married by banns. The witnesses were Charles McLean & Wm Mathewson.1
1851/2 CensusMartin and Mary McLean appeared on the 1852 Census of Vaughan Township, York County, Ontario, at Conc 6, Lot 14, enumerated Jan 1852. Martin was 37 (age next birthday), farmer, born Scotland, and a Free Presbyterian. Mary was born Scotland, Free Presbyterian, and age 36 next birthday. They live in a one story log house; 2 cows, 2 calves, 100# butter produced that year. Their children were Mary (12), Sarah (10), Archibald (6), and James (2.)2
1861 CensusMartin and Mary McLean appeared on the 1861 Census of York County, Ontario. Martin was a laborer, born in Scotland, 45 years old. Mary was 45 and born in Scotland. They could not read or write. They family's religion was Church of Scotland and they lived in a one-story frame house.
The children in the household were all born in Upper Canada - Mary (21), Sarah (18), Archibald (16), John (9), and Hector (5). Hector was the only one who attended school within the year. [ages in this census are recorded as of the next birthday]3
ImmigrationThe McLean family immigrated to the United States circa 1866.4
1865 CensusAn M McLean was listed as the head of household on the 1865 state census in Montgomery County, Illinois. The household had 3 males and 4 females (1 male in his 50s, 2 females in their 40s, 3 females and 1 male in their teens). [This may or may not be Martin & family but is worth noting]5
1870 CensusThey appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Ashkum, Iroquois County, Illinois, enumerated 27 Jun 1870 as Murry and Mary McClan. Martin was 55, a farmer, born in Scotland, with foreign born parents, and was a US citizen. He did not own land but had $400 in personal estate. Mary was 34, keeping house, and born in Scotland. Their children were John (18), James [sic] (14), and Mary (8), all born in Canada. [the ages are off but the family structure fits]6
1880 CensusMartin and Mary McClane appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Ashkum Township, Iroquois County, Illinois, enumerated 12 Jun 1880. Martin was 60, a farmer, born in Scotland, and could not read or write. Mary was 58, keeping house, born in Scotland and could read but not write.
